Dj Bruce Silver started spinning vinyl in 1988 while still in high school. His love for music started long before the era of compact discs. By the time Bruce graduated high school in 1991 his cd collection had grown to well into the 1000’s along with an incredibly large record collection. Bruce played house parties and at his family’s bar, Silverman’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach’s Kempsville neighborhood. After turning 21, Bruce started to play local bars and clubs, learning the finer points of his trade from the area’s top Dj’s. Dj Wild Cherry (Ross Wilson) and Dj Night Doctor (Kip), along with the Latin 5 All-stars taught Bruce the finer points of mixing music, blending and phrasing songs to keep the dance floors full and the clubs bartenders busy by rotating the crowd on the dance floor.
Soon after turning 21 Bruce was spinning in the local hot spots in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. He had regular nights at Legends in Norfolk’s Waterside, Club Rogues in Virginia Beach oceanfront, and Knickerbockers in Norfolk, along with Danzi’s in what is now downtown Virginia Beach. These all lead Bruce to the opportunity to Dj at the legendary Last Act after hour’s night club in Virginia Beach. Last Act was the largest after hour’s club in Virginia. Bruce’s residency lasted for two years, from mid 1994 until 1996. During that time Bruce traveled to Florida and played in various clubs like Baja and Roxy in Fort Lauderdale. Club Boca in Boca Raton and Club Blue in Key West, those are two of Bruce’s favorite memories of Florida.
Bruce then turned his attention to the family business and concentrated on running the day to day operations of his restaurant, all the while still continuing to wow the local crowds with his dance music. After selling the business in 2002, Bruce headed back to the local clubs earning himself almost a year long residence at Central 111 (2003), and later playing such local Tidewater staples as Chicho’s, Crocks, Jillian’s at Waterside, and Guadalajara’s. After having a yearlong residence at Guadalajara’s in downtown Norfolk, Bruce left for a little neighborhood club in Kempsville. Senor Iguanas let Bruce rediscover himself as a Dj by giving him free reign on his music. This allowed Bruce to experiment with mixing house with hip-hop and top 40 and mashing them together into a blender, and what would come out was always one of the best Wednesday nights in town, Ladies night. This being said Bruce turned Senor Iguanas into one of the hottest ladies night hot spots in all of tidewater, leading the way for other clubs to imitate not only his Wednesday night parties but his style of music too. Bruce played Senor Iguanas until the day of the Grand Closing Party the weekend of New Years Eve 2007/2008.
Bruce has been playing the local tidewater hotspots. And has had the privilege to play some for the hottest parties in town. Bruce has played parties for the local fashion industry, playing parties for Azure and Icarus Clothing companies, in Senor Iguanas, Chicho’s in Chesapeake and Voodoo Rouge in Norfolk Virginia. Bruce also played the annual Full Moon Party at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront’s Hilton hotel in the summer of 2006.
Now partners in a production and promotion company in Merida, Mexico, Bruce is taking his parties and style international. Bruce has been working with clubs and celebrity Dj’s from all over the world. Always learning and adapting from the best, Bruce’s belief is to surround himself with the people he most wants to emulate in life and music. Still after all these years Bruce is rocking the clubs, large and small, playing to the crowds.
