Biography
It would be easy by first glance at a photo of the band to immediately drop Twelve Winters into the same "gothic metal" label as bands such as Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, and Evanescence. But by the time the first guitar solo kicks in (before vocalist Kathryn Marks has even sings a note), those similarities seem to be quickly shoved aside.
"Defending the Sacred" is a beautiful blend of thrash/progressive/power and a hint of death metal that is over lined by the operatic voice of Kathryn Marks. But while other female-fronted metal acts focus most of their band's appeal towards the vocals, Twelve Winters puts just as much emphasis on guitar work and progressive thrash style drumming..
Formed in early 2006 as a mere side project, the Mississippi quintet (rounded out by lead guitarist/screaming vocalist Daniel McMillan, guitarist Blake Shelby, drummer Zach Bohannon, and new bassist/growling vocalist Jacob Dowden) quickly dropped other projects in order to harness the sound of Twelve Winters. Their live show quickly developed and gained much attention lead by the amazing talents of guitarist Daniel McMillan and the angelic voice of Kathryn Marks.
The band’s diversity can be seen throughout “Defending the Sacred” from the catchy crowd favorite “Anthem of the Angels to the epic “Twelve Winters” to the fully acoustic “Mourning the Living”. It will have you wondering how a band like this could come out of Mississippi and not Finland.
