Smite

About Me

Charting the development of Smite is an exercise in futility - this conglomeration of bizarrely diverse personalities has mastered the art of lateral evolution. Smite is the fish that emerged from the primordial soup fully formed, walking upright, complete with a set of leathery wings and poisonous fangs. In their hands, love songs become political manifestos, analogue synths become guitars, and human voices become distress signals. According to their patented genealogy, rock begets hip-hop, which in turn begets electronica, which begets jazz, which begets heavy metal, and ultimately implodes upon itself and becomes rock again. If Smite didn't seem so bent on convincing listeners that they're madmen, they'd almost surely be considered geniuses."
-Keith Murray of We Are Scientists
One definition of the word “smite” is to strike or hit hard. Well, these three New York dudes definitely do just that. Kevin Brady, Tyler Fenio and Patrick Galligan are the three insane, or maybe brilliant, guys behind the force known as Smite. Rarely are comedy, seriousness and talent balanced so well by one group. How is it done? No freakin’ clue. The only instruments they play are vocals, guitar (electric and acoustic) and drums, yet their songs are so diverse. Not to mention the fact that their music videos are incredibly entertaining—covering everything from JFK assassination re-enactments to Frisbee infomercials. Whether you are a fan of funny rock or vouch for more serious matters, Smite is sure to hit home.

"We've heard three Smite songs, and the only thing they have in common is that they're all awesome. One sounds like Ted Leo, another like the Velvet Underground and Ween, and the other like the Ass Ponys / Built to Spill. Weird, right?" - L Magazine, NYC
Indie rock from New York...these madmen jump from rock to folk to jazz and hip hop...one song is almost a comedy Velvet Underground...and why not? Slay that sacred cow!! Another, folk rock with a hint of Beastie Boys thru Devo …. These boys are very smart and have perfected a subtle, masterful interweaving of musical styles to a seamless effect producing original diverse results, a rare thing. Special…..
