The Truth About PeTa

Forming through various channels in San Francisco and Oakland, California, Skin Horse began to shape with an idea in late 2006: To create music that had multiple dimensions, many layers, and a soul. The idea was to extrapolate from our own and individualistic backgrounds so that we could write music that was not only unique but had substance as well. Many hours later, we began to unify our collective style and draw from genres such as the doom, metal, experimental, sludge, and drone; in fact, it is because of this approach classifying our sound has become somewhat of a challenge – we feel that this is a good thing!
One year later, we had a three-song demo that caught the ear of the Bay Area’s own, Billy Anderson. As one might guess, this was a bit of a surprise to us mainly because of two facts: Billy’s impressive body of work and our lack of experience as a band. Regardless, we jumped at the chance and hit the studio in December of 2007. After three days at Oakland’s Sharkbite Studio, we had captured fifty minutes of sound, which of course contains the “feeling†and dynamic that we had talked so deeply about one year earlier. Currently, we are unsigned but hope that with the right fit, we can find a label that is likeminded and will offer support as we continue to grow and evolve as individuals as well as a band.
The Band Name
As with any process, association to events, objects, ideas, and people is extremely important, which is why when it came time to choose a band name, we chose carefully. We have taken our name from the book, The Velveteen Rabbit. The reason being is that the Skin Horse is the embodiment of wisdom and knowledge; he is a guide into the unknown and a catalyst for transcendence. In fact, it is through the eyes of the Skin Horse that the Velveteen Rabbit is able to evolve. With that in mind, we wanted a name that had similar characteristics to what we had strived for when writing music: The ability to evolve and transcend our mechanical world and become Real.
