These a just a few thoughts each of us had about the making of BOMBS.
-Jamison-
Hollus was born on July of 2005 and as was pass the third anniversary of the bands first record 'BOMBS'. Our long forgotten debut record feels more current to me than ever. When we cut the record we felt like people needed to hear it. That same sentiment echoed in out live performances for months after the record had been completed. But, for some reason the record never saw the light of a laser, save a few burned copies here and there. Maybe we really just made it for us and if so it work because this record made us a rock roll band, and it lives on to define something in us. Although if you want our opinion on what makes rock roll you just have to listen to the record. It may be too loud.
-Michael-
Bombs, from a technical standpoint, was a learning experience. It was recorded live, absolutely haphazardly, loaded (and lit), mostly at 3 AM, in a studio that a bunch of 18-20 year old kids (us) were given free reign on. We'd roll tape and run into the studio laughing and leaping around to demolish our flipping instruments. It was fun as hell.
From every other standpoint, it's pure energy. Nothing was staged, and no arrangement was set in stone. When I wrote many of the songs, I just wanted it to be a damaging, incarcerating statement blown up from the loins of the urban sewer. If we had one ounce of knowledge in what we were doing, it wouldn't have been anything close. At the time, we finished it and changed pace, as we were always quick to do. But with the other guys' songs, ("Little Trigger," "Movin' Mountain," "Blues in Hell Minor") it remains just as diverse as it does deafening. Now that I can look on it and see it for what it is, I find it actually is exactly what we wanted it to be.
-Bones-
Bombs? The recording process was a euphoric blur. What do you expect when audiophilic tweens lock themselves in a full studio? It was akin to giving Charlie Wonka's factory...except Willy and Grandpa weren't present. The whole music-as-a-job thing was new to all of us. We lacked restraint and common sense and that shows through. From what I can grasp out of the haze was a lot of late nights and a lot of good times. Recording it live was the best decision made about this album, and it's why I think it has a universally approachable quality. I always looked at having to cut another take as another chance to play my most favorite songs in the world.
The best part of it all is that what came out of it is something absolutely perfect. The songs were raw. The quality wasn't great. There were errors abound. But there was a fueled emotion that was present in every track. A sort of virginal quality that can elude more worldly musicians. Abrasive, enthusiastic, optimistic and very passionate; we were young and cockey and we wanted the world to know it. It was something that I easily identified with even though I hadn't known the other guys for more than a few months. When I listen back to these tracks I don't just hear the songs, I see a moment in time. A moment that I think every person has gone through. A time when you were that kid who took what they wanted without question. We knew the meaning of life, and the best part was...we didn't have to answer to anybody.
