About Me

SKIN&INK—THE TATTOO MAGAZINE PEOPLE ACTUALLY READThe prime objective of SKIN&INK Magazine is to reflect the diversity and creativity of tattoo art and tattooed people the world over. Dubbed “the National Geographic of tattoo magazines” by legendary San Francisco tattoo artist Henry Goldfield, SKIN & INK is the magazine for tattoo artists and collectors who wish to learn not only about the current tattoo scene, but about its rich and colorful history. Utilizing the talents of the top writers, photographers and illustrators in the field, SKIN&INK is a true magazine, a collection of many voices—all focusing on one subject: tattoos.Along with balanced coverage of domestic and international tattooing in a clear, reader-friendly format, SKIN & INK features investigative reporting, detailed histories, interviews with leading artists and a solid roster of ongoing columnists offering points of view not voiced in other tattoo publications.Travelin’ Mick reports on his never-ending travels from one global tattoo event to another. Q&A With Matty Jankowksi answers letters from readers about specific tattoo-related topics. Spotlight With Danielle allows lesser-known artists and shops to be discovered and featured. Our Living History covers the historical aspects of tattooing. Tattoo Art 101 With Madame Lazonga and Mr. G (on alternate months) focuses on major tattoo issue of the day. An Artist’s Life With Aaron Bell gives us a chance to experience the day-to-day adventures of one of America’s top tattoo artists. Plus, in every issue, we provide a free centerfold flash sheet pullout taken right off the walls of famous tattoo shops and museums around the world. Every other month we give readers a free Tattoo Legends poster with work by Jack Rudy, Leo Zulueta, Bill & Junii Salmon, Patty Kelley, Aaron Bell, Don Deaton, Sailor Jerry Swallow and many, many others. And on alternate months, we publish a free 16-page graphic feature magazine.Other departments focus on more specific subjects: Bits & Snatches is an ever-changing collection of short pieces, eulogies, quickie stories, pages from travel diaries and, of course, 10 Big Questions, where top tattoo artists are quizzed about their daily lives. Mike Bakaty and Mr. G give readers a chance to hear about the good old days from two of tattooing’s greatest storytellers. Hipshots and Talkback offer interactive platforms for photographers and other creative folks to actually participate by sharing their impressions of the world of tattoo. And Jeff Davidson photographs pretty pinups for Skin&Ink Dolls.Even with our list of contributors, including Chris Rainier from the National Geographic magazine, Lars Krutak from the Smithsonian Institute and Charles Gatewood, the world’s leading fetish photographer, perhaps the two most popular sections of the magazine are the Letters to the Editor and the Readers’ Gallery. A staging area for some amusing and informative feedback and opinions (plus some amazing artwork), Letters establishes a living link with the readers. Expanding on that, the Readers’ Gallery is a place for collectors and artists to showcase their tattoo work. Several new artists have been discovered in the Gallery and, subsequently, featured in our six- to ten-page spreads in later issues. We are very proud of “the tattoo magazine that people actually read.” Every staff member and contributor has a personal attachment and respect for the publication. Our greatest thrill, of course, is when people not usually interested in the world of tattoo pick up our magazine and read it cover to cover. It gives us a special sense of pride when we bridge the gap by responsibly and ethically representing the time-honored tradition of tattoo art throughout the four corners of the world.
