The formation of a real super band is a rare occasion in The Netherlands, but the 303 Allstars are one for real. This combination of diverse, well-experienced producers, all of them responsible for acid classics, played their debut at the Lowlands festival this year. The lead role is played by their favourite toys: 5 Roland TB-303 basslines and TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines. The sound of acid(house), marked by growling, squeaking, crunching and screaming TB-303s was massive in the years ’88-96’ and has been undergoing a solid comeback recently. Acid is still associated with the yellow smiley face and parties in dark holes with only a strobelight to accompany the sound. The 303 Allstars are a 7-piece band, five of whom operate the TB-303’s while one takes care of the beats. Then there is also the conductor, mixing the beats and keeping the pace of the mega-303 orchestra. The band members are members of Acid Junkies, Nederzuur and Rude66: All producers with international fame and extensive live experience. You will see no laptops on stage at the Allstars show: Everything is done using the now more than 25-years old analogue machines.
