SoapboXX was a women owned and operated DIY artist collective. From the outset, SoapboXX had sought out to assist young women in their search for outlets, accessibility, and resources for artistic expression.
SoapboXX Sessions began in July 1999 as a music program for SoapboXX. They are monthly jam sessions for young women of limited musicianship to come together and create music.
The jam sessions met for 2 hours and was formatted as follows:
Open Mic
SoapboXX Soapbox (show and/or tell)
Tutorial Workshop
Jam Session
Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of experience or skill level.
SoapboXX also put on show and sponsored events. The SoapboXX Showcases presented a line-up of female bands. For booking, we built the line-up to support bands with followings and new bands playing their first shows.
I pulled this OC Weekly Article on SoapboXX from archives. There are also other articles that make mention of SoapboXX in the Weekly...some I hadn't even read before until now.
