..The once parallel genres of Hip-Hop and R&B have long since intertwined, but the list of artists who excel at both remains short. Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Devin the Dude and Cee-Lo Green are among the few performers who are as equally comfortable rattling off a verse as they are crooning a ballad. It’s time to add TK Wonder to this rarified category. Born in Baltimore, TK moved to New York City and gravitated towards modeling, eventually appearing in several national television commercials. But her focus was music. Raised on a nourishing diet of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, TK first became interested in stringing syllables together when she performed spoken-word poetry at the since-demolished downtown venue Wetlands. Backed by Questlove on the drums and Scott Storch on the keys, TK Wonder polished her craft at the legendary Sunday night Black Lily events, always drawing raves for her work. She would go on to perform at Def Jam showcases, Nuyorican Poet’s Café and Nell’s. TK’s evolution from poetry to rapping was seamless, as the combination of her stage presence and sharply-honed writing skills merged to create a unique style of telling stories and addressing social issues with intricately-intertwined and multiple-syllable rhymes. She recently appeared on Spec Boogie’s critically-acclaimed “On My Grind†mixtape and has been a guest artist at shows with Taylor McFerrin in venues such as Hiro Ballroom, Studio B, Nublu, Joe’s Pub, Hunter College, Apollo Theater, Delano Hotel in Miami and the Jazz Cafe in London to name a few. TK Wonder has also opened for artists such as Duffy, Erykah Badu and Talib Kweli.
