THE URBAN LATIN JAZZ PROJECT
The Urban Latin Jazz Project is made up of some of the finest Jazz musicians the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. With its heavy influence of Afro Cuban and Brasilian rhythms, a traditional Latin Jazz sound is always at the core of the ensemble. A unique aspect of the group, is it’s ability to incorporate funky R & B groove elements into its various arrangements.
Guitarist / composer, Ray Obiedo, formed this group in 1999 to further explore his love of world music. His compositions for the group are drawn from many musical influences, including contemporary Latin, Brasilian, Funk, Rhythm & Blues and Caribbean as well as other music genres. The rhythm section includes some of Obiedo’s mainstays over the past few years. Pianist David K. Mathews, currently with R & B great Etta James, bassist Dave Belove, drummer Paul van Wageningen and percussionist Michael Spiro. Rounding out the group is flute & saxophonist Alex Murzyn.
The Urban Latin Jazz Project works with a wonderfully rich array of textures and colors, melding together all of it’s musical elements for a uniquely distinct Bay Area flavor.
