About Me

Born in La Habana Cuba in 1956, Eduardo Martín is a world figure in latin guitar music having performed across the globe for over 25 years. During this time he has won numerous international competitions and awards and in 1991 was the first musician from Latin America to win the prestigious Radio France International Guitar Concourse.During an outstanding career he has composed prodigiously and many of his original works are now firmly established in the repertoires of concert guitarists the world over as well as becoming standards on guitar curriculums on five continents. In his early years Eduardo studied guitar with such renowned professors as Jesús Ortega and Dagoberto Arguiz. He subsequently refined his art through masterclasses with maestros such as Isaac Nicola, Leo Brouwer, David Russell, Antonio Lauro, Alirio Díaz, Wolgang Lendle, Costas Cotsiolis and Ichiro Suzuki. In 1987, together with Rey Guerra, Carlos Alberto Lloró and Walfrido Domínguez, he founded the guitar quartet "Guitarra 4", giving concerts all over Cuba; this lead to many radio and television appearances and a recording contract with the Cuban record label EGREM. In 1990 he teamed up again with Walfrido Domínguez to form "Dúo Confluencia", recording in various Latin American countries before embarking on a critically acclaimed world tour taking in the Americas, Europe and the Far East.In the last decade Eduardo has continued to broaden his horizons to form alongside Walfrido Dominguez the Cuarteto Imaginario with two Spanish virtuosos Francisco Gamallo and Jose Ignacio López, again to great acclaim. During this period as well as undertaking compositions for duo, trio and quartet, he has composed works for guitar and flute, guitar and orchestra and also incidental pieces for theatre and cinema. This body of work was honored in 1999 through his invitation to become a delegate composer for the Festival "Sonidos de Las Americas" in New York for the American Composers Orchestra. He now resides in La Habana where as well as being a Professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba, he regularly judges competitions and continues to travel performing his own work and arrangements.

Sounds Like: "...he is probably the new king of melody on guitar, able to write lyrically in a distinguished and memorable way that can appease both popular and high art camps". Ellis, American Record Guide ©2007.......................................... ........................................"Really, what can one say about a recording as good as this? The music, all written by the Cuban composer Eduardo Martin, whose name I only know from two tracks on the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet CD, ‘LAGQ Latiri’, is simply superb. Throughout the 64 minutes of music on this disc there are rhythmic complexities which boggle the mind, stunning harmonies and wonderfully crafted melodies".Steve Marsh. ©Classical Guitar Magazine 2007. ............................................................ ..................................... Composer Eduardo Martin, perhaps best known from the LAGQ's rendering of "Hasta Alicia Baila" and "La Trampa," proves not only his stewardship for Villa-Lobos' spirit, but for also truly drawing it into the 21st century with writing "Angels in the Street. © Alan Fark, Minor 7th.com. Acoustic Guitar Music Reviews------------------------------The beauty of this music is that in it, the distinction of classical and popular means very little: the resources of classical guitar are used in order to elaborate popular bases, and the classical and popular are woven into a language in which they are not easily dissociable. James Manheim. Guitare Classique 2007.
