Zodiac signs.
This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun, and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence towards the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown, or to any man or number of men; go freely with the powerful uneducated persons, and with the young, and mothers, of families: read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life: re-examine all you have been told at school or church, or in any books, and dismiss whatever insults your soul. ~Walt Whitman
Suffering is by no means a privilege, a sign of nobility, a reminder of God. Suffering is a fierce, bestial thing, commonplace, uncalled for, natural as air. It is intangible; no one can grasp it or fight against it; it dwells in time is the same thing as time; if it comes in fits and starts, that is only so as to leave the sufferer more defenseless during the moments that follow, those long moments when one relives the last bout of torture and waits for the next.
~Cesar Pavese, Italian Poet, Critic, Author, and Translator; he introduced the Italian public to translations of American authors (that were then new) during the dark days of Facism in Italy.
I have been through life and suffered a great deal, but I have had happy moments, as well. Every moment one lives is different from the other. The good, the bad, hardship, the joy, the tragedy, love and happiness are all interwoven into one single, indescribable whole that is called life. You cannot separate the good and the bad, and perhaps there is no need to do so. ~Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
The great secret, Eliza, is not having bad manners or good manners or any other particular sort of manners, but having the same manner for all human souls: in short, behaving as if you were in Heaven, where there are no third-class carriages, and on soul. ~George Bernard Shaw

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

The phrase, Entertaining Angels, refers to the practice of treating all guests--be they royalty or peasants--as if they were visiting angels.
There is something very valuable about seeing ourselves through the eyes of others.
Life is like topography, Hobbes. There are summits of happiness and success...Flat stretches of boring routine...And valleys of frustration and failure. ~Calvin and Hobbes

Movies:

They say the movies should be more like life; I think life should be more like the movies. ~Myrna Loy
You know what I would like to do: make a film with actors standing in empty space so that the spectator would have to imagine the background of the characters. ~Michelangelo Antonioni
Baseball is not America's pastime, it's THE MOVIES... I love QUALITY cinema, QUALITY film, QUALITY movies. I enjoy movies possessing that right script, choosing the right actors, and gathering the best production & technical staff. A fine movie remembers and utilizes audience responses & intelligence because the movie audience love and demand challenge and stimulation.
No DVDs with the director's cut … ONCE A FILM HAS BEEN COMPLETED, IT SHOULD NOT BE FURTHER ALTERED IN ANY WAY. No DVDs with features and extras … I went to the movie theater and viewed the movie/film the way it was with NO director’s cut or extras. But if the DVDs with the director’s cut and extras get you to love cinema, Classic Movies, etc. and pass down the legacy of films to the new generation, I have no business to complain.

Television is bubble-gum for the eyes. ~Frank Lloyd Wright

Books:

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY BOOKS. WHOEVER MAKES YOU FEEL GUILTY ABOUT THAT, THROW A BOOK AT THEM. (By that I mean, tell them a book that means alot to you - wow them by your love, knowledge, understanding, and power for reading and/writing.) BOOKS SHOULD ASSAULT PEOPLE (INTELLECTUALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY, AND METAPHYSICALLY).

Heroes:

The fact that we try makes us heroes; we just don't necessarily succeed ... but we try.
LOOK UP HANNAH speech
I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an Emperor - that's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible -- Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
The way of life can be free and beautiful.
But we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me I say, "Do not despair." The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators die; and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
Soldiers - Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel; who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate; only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.
Soldiers - Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written, "the kingdom of God is within man" -- not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men, in you, you the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite!! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people!! Now, let us fight to fulfill that promise!! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers - In the name of democracy, let us all unite!!!
Look up! Look up! The clouds are lifting - the sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world. A kind new world where men will rise above their hate and brutality. The soul of man has been given wings - and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow - into the light of hope - into the future, that glorious future that belongs to you, to me and to all of us. Look up Hannah. Look up.
