Those of you who already know Matt Martino from his days in the Windy City know that he's as slick as ice and all business. For those of you who are just discovering Mr. Martino, you've found him at the right time. After cutting his teeth in Chicago Matt Martino brings his well polished, retro/pop sound to Nashville and he's been turning heads since he arrived. Martino wastes no time in demonstrating his prowess as a musician and all who have heard him know full well his potential is limitless. His writing is delicate and poignant; he has a knack for capturing the most subtle human emotions as well as beautifully simplifying the most complex ones. His skills as an arranger and orchestrator come through when his Chicago horn section, The Red Hots, come bursting through on funkier tunes like I Got It! and What You Need. Then in the next instant he can pull in the reigns and create the most intimate atmosphere even in the most crowded rooms with tunes like View From a Barstool, which has become a bit of an underground hit among his fans. He will be the first to admit, however, that a large reason for his success to date is his penchant for surrounding himself with top notch players. Martino was well respected as a sax player in Chicago's jazz circles and he regularly stocked his band with some of Chicago's heavy hitters. That pattern has continued in Nashville where Dan Hagemann, his newest partner in crime, has joined him to create a sound completely unique from Martino's Chicago days. More prevelant now are signs of maturity in Martino's playing and writing. His more recent works spend less time flexing the muscle of the quality musicians around him and instead get right to the heart of the matter. Martino's confident Rhodes piano sets the tone and the other musicians follow suit. The result is something that's catching on quickly.
