About Me

Fallen Cities Music Video (FEATURING JENNY WATTS ON DRUMS)
..
Jenny (Jen) Watts was born and raised in Southern California, and was involved with music from an early age. At 2 years old, she became a Van Halen fan, her favorite album being “1984”. Jenny’s first experience playing music was when she was 7 years old when her parents bought her a classical guitar. She pursued guitar until the age of 11 when she discovered drumming. By age 12 Jen formed a band with her brother Brett. They began writing and recording original songs and gigging all around California.
In her freshman year of high school (at 14 years old) Jen was introduced to Dream Theater. “A friend of mine gave me his copy of Images & Words. I was floored; I had never heard drumming like that in my life. That’s when I really started to pursue my drumming career.” Mike Portnoy has been her biggest inspiration.
At the age of 17, Jen began to take advanced music theory courses in high school and began professional drum instruction for the first time. She studied for 2 years with Mike Lund. During her time studying with Mike she honed her skills and greatly advanced her techniques and abilities. She focused on learning progressive styles of drumming including odd time signatures and double bass rhythms.
Jen spent most of her time practicing and learning from her favorite drummers (Mike Portnoy, Niel Peart, Thomas Lang, & Kenny Aronoff). In recent years, she has had the pleasure of making friends with several successful drummers who have been great inspirations and mentors to her such as Frankie Banali (of Quiet Riot). She has played with several great bands such as Crash, Torrent, Souljourners & The New Division .
In the time she spends away from the drums Jen has many hobbies and interests. She is an accomplished martial artist, having earned her black belt in Taekwondo in 2005. She also loves to snowboard whenever there’s enough snow on the ground.
Jen has an extreme passion for drumming and is driven to succeed. She has been described as “a hard hitter” and “an incredibly musical player”. A fan at a Torrent show once said, “Well she doesn’t ‘hit like a girl’”. Jenny is confident that she can tackle anything that comes her way, and is eager and motivated to excel in her drumming career.
