The Green Bay Packers history dates back to August 11, 1919 when Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun decided to organize a football team. The Indian Packing Company, in response to Lambeau's requests, purchased jerseys for the original team resulting in the moniker "Packers." Though the Indian Packing Company would nearly disappear before the end of the first season, the name would endure.
The first season showed the pattern for the future when the Packers went 10-1 playing teams from Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1921 the Packers joined a recently created professional football league, but was unable cover costs and folded at the end the of season.
However, in 1922 the tenacious Curly Lambeau was able to find new investors for the Packers (including himself), and the Packers once again took the field. Once again they were hit with financial disaster as rain caused cancellations threatened to bankrupt the team. Lambeau plead his case to the local business men and thus formed the Green Bay Football Corporation, resulting in the tradition of a community owned football team. Shares in the team have been purchased and sold for 84 years.
The Green Bay Packers play in the most historic stadium in all of professional football: Lambeau Field. The first game was played on September 29, 1957 between the Packers and the much hated Chicago Bears, with the Packers prevailing 21-17. Originally called City Stadium, the field was named Lambeau Field on September 11, 1965 following the death of team founder Curly Lambeau. The field currently has a capacity of 72,601, up from 32,500 in 1957. The field is located at 1265 Lombardi Ave .
The Packers have won 12 Professional Football Championships; 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967, & 1996. The head coach of the first 6 world champions was the immortal Curly Lambeau. Vince Lombardi was the head coach for the next 5, and Mike Holmgren coached the most recent championship team.
Vince Lombardi will be remembered as long as football is played as the greatest coach of all time. The championships he won in 1966 and 1967 are the first "Super Bowls" that were ever played. His name is now engraved on the trophy that is handed out annually to the Super Bowl Winner.
The Packers have 21 members of its organization in the Hall of Fame, second
only to the lowly Chicago Bears (26). /p

"Official song and dedicated to the Green Bay Packers."
Words and music by Eric Karll. 1931 (c)
Performed by the NFL Marching Band, Bernard Green, Conductor.
Introduced by Quarterback Bart
Starr.
Recorded July 7-8, 1960.
Produced on RCA Victor LPM-2292.
(It seems there are slightly different words to this song.
These are the words John Heim suggested on his site.)
----------------------------------------------------
Bart Starr shouts: Go! You Packers, Go!
Band
plays: Fight, you
Packers, fight,
and bring the bacon home to old Green Bay!
Hail, hail, the gang's all here to yell for you,
and keep you going in your winning ways!
Hail, hail, the gang's all here to tell you, too,
that, win or lose, we'll always sing your praises, Packers!
Go, you Packers, go and get 'em!
Go, you fighting fools, upset 'em!
Smash their line with all your might!
A touchdown, Packers! Fight, fight, fight!
Fight on, you Blue and Gold, to glory!
Win this game, the same old story!
Fight, you Packers, fight,
and bring the bacon home to old Green Bay!

courtesy of http://hometown.aol.com/wgaulke/packers.htmlThe Packers colors were at one point Navy Blue, Green and Gold. Vince Lombardi eliminiated the blue, leaving the Pack with Green & Gold, after the fight song had been written, please substitute Green for Blue in the song.
