Innovative, sultry, genuine, unique - that is simply the tip of the iceberg that is Steph, The Sapphic Songstress. Do not be offended by the fact that she is an "out" lesbian, because her vocal ability, production prowess, creative writing style, and eccentic approach to the genre of R&B are unmatched. The content of her work is far from limited, touching subjects like spirituality, politics, personal conflicts, as well as the all-important subject of love and its many facets.
"I don't want people to think that I'm solely interested in the gay and lesbian experience; that's merely a part of who I am. I'm interested in the human experience, what connects us and brings us all together. This world is big enough to include many people from varied walks of life...that's how it is, and obviously that's how life is meant to play out. This is the essence I attempt to capture when I write."
Born and raised in the Maryland/Washington, D.C. area, Steph (real name: Stephanie Hilliard) was blessed to be born into a family of singers and musicians. Since the tender age of 2, the youngster has been honing her vocal skills with the help of her talented family members. Growing up with older parents had its many advantages, for they possessed records like The Stylistics, The Whispers, Blue Magic, Nancy Wilson, Jean Carn, Denise Williams, and many others. Stephanie constantly stayed up studying the family's collection of vinyls until her mother forced her to go to bed. From there, she developed her writing style which blossomed at age 8. At 16, Stephanie was in the studio producing her own original compositions. It was also at that time that she decided to move from Lanham, MD to New York City to pursue her singing and fine arts career. At 18, she made her move and has not stopped doing what she loves. After graduating from The Cooper Union School of Art in 2004, she decided to vigorously pursue her music career almost exclusively.
Since then, Steph has performed at many venues, including The WOW Cafe, The Demarara, Club Speed, Opaline, Stay, and many others. She has also collaborated with such notable acts as Substantial of ExtendedFamm, The Natur-L of SD (formerly Soul Dept.), rnb, Bronche, E-Lo, Ro, and several others just to name a few. Steph is slated to soon release two EPs, "The Leftovers - Vol. 1" (Spring '08) and "Fulfillment" (Fall '08) in 2008. For those who have been waiting for a true R&B sensation, Steph will not let you down.
...The Sapphic Soul Revolution has begun...stay tuned.
