About Me

O'siyo oginalii tsilugi! Dtohitsu?
(Hello friends welcome! How are you?)

A woman in an airport once said to me, "Wow, you have a lot of goals for a little girl in a wheelchair." There are several things wrong with that statement - for example, I may be little at five feet, but I'm no little girl. And secondly, one would think a woman in my position as a quadriplegic would have to be more ambitious than the rest just to keep her head above water. No, I'm not content to sit and accept that everyone else can attain their dreams while I simply exist. Existence is not good enough for me. I want life. I want people. I want experiences others take for granted. I want success.

I guess I would best describe myself as a dreamer with high ambitions. First my goal was to commission portraits by 18 and I've been doing that for eight years now. Then my goal was to finish a novel by 25 and I finished From the Darkness Risen at 22 and published it this past September ( Click here to see it on Amazon.com ). I'm working on the second and third novels right now with the fourth and fifth planned. I have plans to get into screenwriting, to bring stories to the screen about people like me without stereotypes. Quadriplegics. Paraplegics. Artists.

I'm an outdoors person. I'm much happier in jeans and a t-shirt with a fishing pole shooting the breeze with friends on a river than I am in a tight dress with fifteen pounds of makeup. I can usually tell right off the bat if you're genuine or fake and I don't respond well to laziness or procrastination. I'm a spiritual person. I call myself "Catholic with Pagan tendencies." Much of the last three years of my life has been devoted to my writing and understanding my Native American heritage. I am Ani'Yun'Wiya (Cherokee) and Choctaw, both on my father's side. I'm trying to learn the Tsagali language now.

Yigaquu osaniyu adanvto adadoligi nigohilvi nasquv utloyasdi nihi.
(May the Great Spirit's blessings always be with you.)

My Interests

Generally my interest are all linked to history in some way, i.e. I'm a history geek so live with it. Civil War research is a daily event, specifically social and sexual politics of the 1800s, Maine, the Chamberlain and Jewett families, Queen Victoria's reign. I also study Egyptology and Biblical history (there is a difference in Biblical history and "Bible study"). I love animals (I was going to be a marine biologist). I camp, fish and I've just discovered whitewater rafting. I am a spiritualist - reincarnation, paranormal investigation, meditation and herbal healing. ART! My artistic style is realism but I'm trying to expand into impressionism and surrealism. Berthe Morisot is my most favorite artist, among dozens of favorites. Here are some of my pieces:

Lovers, charcoal pencil, 2000.

Tarot, colored pencil, 1998.

Lying Girl, charcoal pencil, 1999.

African Sunset, acrylic paint, 2001.

The Married Couple, charcoal pencil, 2007.

Italian Sunset, airbrush and acrylic, 1999.

10 Minute Doodle, charcoal pencil, 2007.

I'd like to meet:

I would love to have a big supper with my ancestors from both sides of my family, Native American and white at the same table. There would be combat vets from every war this continent has seen going back to the 1600s. There would be authors and artists and politicians. My Grandma Lou Ellen would be there and be as beautiful as she was before she was murdered in 1955. Both my grandpas would be there and they wouldn't have to drink to feel happy. My great-grandmother would read me a story like when I was little. We'd have a drum circle and sing all night long. And everybody would love each other.

Since we're up to our knees in a fantasy world, I would also love to meet Michael and Eddie Spears, Adam Beach, Johnny Depp, Thosh Collins, Virgil Ortiz, and all of you lovely people in MySpace Land who call me a friend.

Winters I Remember, colored pencil, 2000.

Kevin Richardson, charcoal pencil, 1998 (left). Indian Dance, colored pencil, 1998 (right).

Music:

I like pretty much every kind of music except hardcore rap. The kind of music I listen to depends on what I'm doing. If I'm meditating, I listen to instrumentals; if I'm writing, I listen to music that fits the subject of whatever I'm writing. Right now I'm listening to a lot of country like Little Big Town, Sugarland, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Gretchen Wilson, and the goddess herself... Patsy Cline. I also listen to Billy Holiday, Etta James, Norah Jones, and other music from the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Movies:

Favorite Movies: Gettysburg, Gods & Generals, Cold Mountain, Black Cloud, Smoke Signals, Interview with the Vampire, Tombstone, Into the West, Dances with Wolves, Now & Forever, Glory, The Day Lincoln Was Shot, Andersonville, The Hunley, Gone with the Wind, From Hell, Top Gun, Windtalkers, The Excorsist, Thunderheart.
Favorite Actors: Johnny Depp, Eddie Spears, Michael Spears, Adam Beach, Rodney A. Grant back in the day, Graham Greene, Goran Visnjic, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Cage, Jude Law.
Favorite Actresses: Charlize Theron, Tonantzin Carmelo, Tantoo Cardinal, Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts, Irene Bedard, Kerri Russell, Annette Benning, Jane Seymour.

Television:

I mostly watch the History Channel, the Travel Channel and Discovery Health. My favorite TV show of all time is Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, quickly followed by Deadwood, ER and Ghost Hunters.

Books:

My most favorite books are the ones I read as a little kid like the Little Women series and the Little House on the Prairie series. I could read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice over and over again too. Two books I constantly keep around me are On Writing by Stephen King and Someone Else's Yesterday by Jeffrey Keene. Everybody should be forced to read The Diary of Anne Frank, too. It will change your life.

Heroes:

My heroes are people who began with basically nothing and made themselves into something great, like Joshua L. Chamberlain, William T. Sherman, Stonewall Jackson and others. The people who came before us and survived horrible things are a huge inspiration to me as well. Tecumseh, Dragging Canoe and all Cherokees who recognized they were being robbed before everyone else saw it.
