Crazy about rhythms since the tender age of 3, finally won the ‘war’ against his mom, and started taking classes at age 11 with a well known professor from São Paulo, Mestre Dinho Gonsalves, with whom continued studying until he was 17.
Years later, took classes with Lilian Carmona, getting ready for studying in the USA, since she used a method learned at Berklee School of Music.
Simultaneously attended College studying Composing and Conducting at Faculdade Santa Marcelina.
After that, Tuto moved to the USA to attended the Musicians Institute, CA. There, he had the opportunity to study with the likes of: Joe Porcaro, Ralph Humphrey, Efrain Toro, Peter Erskine, as well as attending to countless of workshops with: Bernard Purdie, Manu Katché, John Robinson, Jonathan Moffet, Rayford Griffin, and many others.
Being there he played in the up&comming Brazillian Jazz scene of LA with Otmaro Ruiz (Arturo Sandoval), Renato Neto (Chaka Khan, Prince), Afonso Celso, Rique Pantoja, Santana (Brazilian bass player), etc.
Despite his love for instrumental music, the R&B and Pop of the likes of EW&Fire, George Benson, Marvin Gaye, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, where a major influence as well.
Jeff Porcaro, Steve Ferrone, John Robinson and Steve Gadd, where the ones he looked upon for reference in both feel and style, and at times has been compared to.
He can be referred to as a pop drummer that listens to Jack DeJohnnette, Tony Williams and Elvin Jones, having an extra jazzy feel.
Back to Brazil, Tuto continued playing Latin/Jazz and some Fusion at the same time he played R&B/Pop gigs, playing/recording with: Claudio Zoli, Zélia Duncan, Paula Lima, Seu Jorge, Luciana Mello, Max de Castro, Banda BlackRio, Jair Oliveira, Simoninha, Patricia Marx, Anderson Soares, Edsel Gomes, Daniela Mercury, Xuxa, Sandy & Junior , Seu Jorge, Pedro Mariano, Tomati, Zérro Santos Big Band, Tumbao (with Pepe Cisneros Felipe Lamoglia (Gloria Estefan and Arturo Sandoval, Gonzalo Rubalcaba) , The Heartbreakers, Lancaster Blues Band, etc.
For the past 5 years he has led the project/band called Grooveria ElectroAcústica, playing every tuesday at Na Mata Café (São Paulo), being the most successful night of live music in São Paulo for years (receiving that award by Veja São Paulo magazine 3 years in a row), where the most important names of the industry have come to listen and ‘sit in’ weekly. Ed Motta , Marcelo D2, Alexandre Carlo (Natiruts), Rogerio Flausino, Wilson Sideral, Junior Lima, Sandra de Sá, and all the others mentioned before , plus the best players from allover including the guitarrist of Jamiroquai, the band SoulLive, and even the Chemical Brothers came to listen.
Last year he produced the first CD of this project, Grooveria1, on which Claudio Zoli, Max de Castro, Jair Oliveira, Max Viana, Toninho Horta, Paula Lima, Rappin’Hood, Zé Ricardo, have participated, he made versions of classics such as Pink Panther Theme (H. Mancini) and When Doves Cry (Prince), as well as Brazilian classics like Com Que Roupa from Noel Rosa.
Made various appearances at TV Shows like: Bem Brasil ( Seu Jorge , Max Castro, Patricia Coelho), Altas Horas (Claudio Zoli, Max de Castro, S&J) , Marcos Mion ( Patricia Coelho, Zoli e Max De Castro), Jô Soares (Max de Castro , Simoninha, Patricia Coelho e Tributo a Wilson Simonal) Faustão (Max de Castro, Simoninha e Sandy & Junior) e Calderao do Huck (Thalma de Freitas, Max de Castro e Sandy e Junior) and many more.
In August 2001, played for Max de Castro and Wilson Simoninha at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors in NYC.
In October 2002, was the official drummer of the record company Trama, known for its excellence in the quality of its artists, playing in 22 concerts in 10 countries throughout Europe.
On this same tour, recorded a program at BBC Studios with Simoninha, Max de Castro, Jair Oliveira and Patricia Marx, in what became known as ‘The New Samba Revue Tour’.
Tuto has played in the biggest and most important Music festivals in Brazil as Rock’n’ Rio 3 and the Festival de Música de Salvador.
From January, 2004 to January 2006 held the drummer’s seat at the biggest gig in Brazil called Sandy & Junior, playing for thousands of people and touring all over the world including Japan.
Tuto has his own Vic Firth Signature model drumstick and has been endorsed in the past by Zildjian and Premier.
Also wrote for two years a column at the main drummer’s publication in Brazil at the time, Bateria e Percussão, when his column Groove Workshop received tons of emails from all over the country with compliments and questions.
In December ’05, was the musical director/drummer of a Seu Jorge concert for 6.000 people at Via Funchal venue used to receive concerts of the likes of Norah Jones, Deep Purple, Jamiroquai, etc.
Last year Grooveria made a tour to a huge concert hall in Guarapari in the southeast of Brasil and has had 3 of their first album songs played on leaders FM stations of their market, Eldorado FM and Nova Brasil FM, and best of all, spontaneously!
His band Grooveria, is constantly called to backup lead singers/artists on events/shows like last June’s Vogue Magazine, with Seu Jorge and Ed Motta, for their ability to adapt instantaneously, under Tuto’s lead, on the most diverse musical situations, many times with no prior rehearsal!Contact:
