About Me

Remember Utah Phillips
1935-2008
"the stories i tell don't just come out of my own life. many of them come to me from my elders. i strained to hear them through the roar of my own ego, my own needs and desires. but when i became quiet and open to the thoughts and feelings of my elders, i learned that my life-story deepens, grows richer, by talking in stories of those who have led extraordinary lives, lives that can never be lived again, except in memory-- through mine, through yours-- as the fragments of our story-- lives mix and blend into a common whole, the great river of our collective memory of which we are all a part and into which each one of us will, some day, dissolve.
sing your song. dance your dance. tell your story. i'll listen..."
U. Utah Phillips
(from his liner notes on "the past didn't go anywhere" the amazing document of Utah's stories lovingly rendered by Ani DiFranco.)
Carry it on.

I'm a poet and songwriter. There are a few of my poems posted in the blogs. They'll change from time to time. There will be new songs up next week or next month or next year! Recording is going very slowly! The few tunes posted here are from Tuesday rehearsals with Steve Bird on bass. There are more songs at myspace.com/junkyardburlesque.
I've been lucky enough to connect with many poets and musicians and other artists who have inspired me along the way. Some became great friends. All were teachers. I’m happy to have been in the trenches with them from time to time, and look forward to more.
There is more info in my BIO blog.

I want. Only that. But that.

I want to thank Liz Ryder, that Shropshire lass, for the nice wallpapering job she did on my page. Thanks, your majesty!

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: Stay tuned
Band Members: My solo stuff is blues and folk and rock influenced with a little squeeze of country and jazz. I play with and write for a band, too: Junkyard Burlesque. See and hear more at myspace.com/junkyardburlesque
Junkyard Burlesque is an all original trio: me on vocals and guitar, Brady McKay on vocals and piano (plus a mean washboard), and Steve Bird on upright bass. Sometimes we add a pianist, a drummer and a horn or two.
Get more of Brady at myspace.com/bradymckay and www.bradymckay.com
Steve and I have also been sitting in regularly with the ubiquitous Ken Burnett's bluegrassy romp Mandolin Avenue. More at Myspace.com/mandolinavenue
I'm particularly enjoying playing a little dobro with Liz Ryder, whose subtle folkish ballads often conceal a complex arrangement of interesting changes and overtones. She's a gifted guitartist and harpist as well. See her at Myspace.com/lizryder.
Influences: INFLUENCES
My list of influences is more of a litany of musicians, poets and visual artists I've been lucky enough to have stumbled across in my life, without whom I would certainly have had a less fulfilling life. This somewhat long list is terribly incomplete. I couldn't name all of the people I'm indebted to for inspiration. Some are: Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, John Lennon, Gary Snyder, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Creeley, Johnny Cash, Sam Shepard, Fats Waller, Patti Smith, John Hammond Jr., Pops & Mavis Staples, Bruce Springsteen, Jacques Prevert, Lucinda Williams, Gabriela Mistral, Tampa Red, Janis Joplin, Pink Anderson, Walt Whitman, Nanao Sakaki, Leon Redbone, Pablo Neruda, Samuel Beckett, Victor Wong, Dr. John, Candy Jernigan, Jerry Garcia, Billie Holiday, Townes van Zandt, Elmore James, Li-Young Lee (the quote above is his), Allen Ginsberg, Queen Ida Guillory, J.J. Cale, Patsy Cline, Robert Johnson, Joseph Cornell, Hank Bukowski, Galway Kinnell, Taj Mahal, Kathryn Hohlwein, Jimi Suzuki, Dennis Schmitz, Rickie Lee Jones, Lou Reed, Pablo Picasso, Lisel Mueller, Fernando Alegria, Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton, Marcel Duchamp, Anne Waldman, John Lee Hooker, George Jones, Hank Williams, Elvis, Sippie Wallace, Jack Kerouac, Ma Rainey.
And so many good friends & teachers. Thank you all!
Shout out to Kai, Sebastian, Maddy, Dre, Alice, Brady, Steve, Luke, Tony and Candice.

well, here i am.
an object of little relief.
pat me on the fanny.
i will not go away
--Annie Menebroker
Sounds Like: I'm riding the train that leads away from my past.
I watch the tracks disappearing,
My face up against the glass.
Those rails might rust but they're never gone.
They're an arrow pointing out the way
From the ruins I'm standing on.
