Kafui Dey

Pidgin lyrics meet neo-traditional Ghana beats

About Me

Kafui Dey is a producer, writer and performer from Ghana. Born in Ouagadougou, he grew up in Ghana, China and the United Kingdom. Kafui was shaped by the music his father listened to in the 70's and 80': traditional agbadza music from the Ewe of Ghana, Osibisa, Wulomei, smooth jazz by Bob James, Presbyterian hymns, Congolese rhythms, Camerounian makossa, classical music from Mozart to Handel and Bach, Boney M, Bee Gees disco grooves and more. 3 years in London immersed him in the sounds of Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Paul Hardcastle, Simply Red and Aswad, broadening his musical horizons even further. While in university, Kafui played keyboards in Local Crisis, a reggae band formed by Rocky Dawuni (www.myspace.com/rockydawunimusic) just after Gulf War I. He has played studio sessions for Ghanaian reggae singer Shasha Marley (www.myspace.com/shashamarley), the seminal hiplife duo Akyeame, highlife supergroup Nakorex and various other musicians in Ghana. In November 2007, he produced a solo piano jazz album which featured his brother Victor (www.myspace.com/jazzychristmas).Kafui is currently working with Ghanaian R&B singer Chemphe (www.myspace.com/chemphe) and has an ongoing reggae project under the name Taflatse (www.myspace.com/taflatse). The music you hear on this site is the result of his experimentation with traditional Ewe rhythms and pidgin, the English-based creole that is spoken throughout West Africa.
