Laura Hurwitz- Author

My name is Laura Hurwitz. I am a writer. So far, I have written several
adult location-based photographic essay books, and am co-author of
The Adventures of Riley series. I have a crazy number of kids, six to be precise, 4 girls and 2 boys. Of the 4 girls, three of them were born at the same time. They are all pretty much grown up- in fact, with the triplets’ exodus to their respective colleges next year, I’ll have only one child
left at home.
I am a text writer for Eaglemont Press, based in Bellevue, Washington.
I am grateful to modern technology, specifically the telephone and the internet, which enables me to communicate swiftly and effectively. I have been fortunate enough to travel for some of the books I’ve worked on, including an amazing trip to the MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa
(a life-changing experience, truly!) and to the Cayman Islands, Holmes County, Ohio, the Methow Valley in Washington State, and one of
my absolute favorite places on the planet, Nantucket Island. Actually, my family and I have been going to Nantucket during the summer for over
thirty years. Other favorite places include London, California (specifically San Fran and the Bay Area) and New York City, where my two oldest
kids live.
I am currently in the Writing Program at Columbia University. I have also participated in the Wesleyan Writer’s Workshop. I have always had the compulsion to write, from the diary I kept as a child to journals I have kept since college. If I could pick what I love best to write, it might be the non-fiction short essay, and I love humor. In my class at Columbia, I discovered I also enjoy short fiction. Novelists impress me- to sustain a story from beginning to end, over hundreds of pages, is pretty amazing.
I did manage that once, but my novel is sitting in my computer, as yet unpublished.
My interests include writing, reading (I’m a member of two book groups), animals and conservation, politics, running (I’m an avid daily runner), yoga, tennis, biking, hiking, and music. I play the piano and guitar, both rather badly, but I adore listening to my kids play. I am a huge fan of Dave Matthews Band, Guster, Third Eye Blind, The Counting Crows, Coldplay, REM, and the Goo Goo Dolls. I think everyone should see The Shawshank Redemption at least once.
