About Me

BIOGRAPHY:Drawing from an influential palette of Elvis Costello, Steve Earl, and The Beatles, Texas singer-songwriter Lee Alexander offers no apologies on his debut release, Out of Place. Biting satire is sprinkled throughout the songs, reinforcing the old adage that "art doesn't forgive.” Heralded by the Houston Chronicle as one of the top albums of 2006, Out of Place reveals Alexander's push to mix things up stylistically and use a myriad of organic instrumentation to build a good song. His catchy melodies and razor sharp lyrics recently placed him as: a finalist in the 2007 Independent Music Awards, a winner in the 2007 IMA Vox Populi Competition, and a semifinalist in the 2005 UK Songwriting Contest. He was also selected as a featured artist in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest’s NAMM showcase, the 2006 Houston Press Music Awards (where he was nominated in five catagories), and as a Sonicbids Spotlight Artist.A conscientious observer, Alexander's songs do not shy away from addressing political issues. He also continues to donate a portion of performance proceeds to human rights initiatives through Amnesty International, The Adopt-A-Minefield program, and Pacifica Radio. In addition he also assists in performing benefits for with AI, The Rise School, and the Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Influences:

Over time I've soaked up influences from every source imaginable, so it would be pointless to name them all. I could start with naming the Beatles, but I guess the same goes for most musicians these days. Any songwriter you can imagine who plays an instrument and performs their own material has probably made an impression on me in some way, but some of the more prevelant influences though would be Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, Patty Griffin, Steve Earl, Stevie Wonder, and Jim Croce.

Sounds Like:

The Beatles, Elliot Smith, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Jayhawks, Jack Johnson, The Wallflowers...

The story behind

The song "Maggie" is fairly new, and I wrote it about my Grandmother when she passed away. Her name was "Dorthy", but I didn't want people thinking the song was some allusion to the Wizard of OZ, so I...

What does the word "DIVA" mean anymore?

Forgive me for being a curmudgeon, but I've noticed a gross misuse of the word "diva" these days - starting with the media. As most of us know, it is normally applied to opera singers and at times ha...
