About Loony Tunes
Loony Tunes is a night which screens cult/unusual/odd/experimental animation shorts and features and plays odd exotica/playful electronica/leftfield etc music. Submissions from animators are
most welcome - get in touch!
It's a regular event - running on the
3rd Wednesday of every month.
(It originally ran from 2005-2006 in the Horse Bazaar, Melbourne City). The re-opening night is Wednesday June 27th 2k7 - 8pm-11pm at the The North Bazaar in Northcote!
The emphasis is on screening shorts + one feature length animation is usually shown each event.
Many of the animations have their soundtrack complemented/replaced by DJ Delay and guests. (How about some Messer Chups with Norman Mclaren??)

The Music / Soundtrack
Music is an equally important component to Loony Tunes. Most of the animation screened is recontextualised by the DJ (Delay & guests) providing an alternate soundtrack. This is so because Delay likes messing with the meaning. There's no disrespect to the original soundtrack (if one exists) which might find itself in the mix anyway :)
.......eg Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtrack over the fight scene in "The Adventures Of Prince Achmed"......
Sound from Morricone, Tipsy, Atom Heart, Exotica, Messer Chups, Can, Bernd Friedman, BBC Radio Workshop, Raymond Scott, Bisk, Negativland, Arthur Lyman, Nurse With Wound, Maurizio, Antediluvian Rockinghorse, Beam Up, Oleg Kostrow, Take Rodriguez, Tribal Circus, Senor Coconut, A Certain Frank, People Like Us, The Rip Off Artist, Evolution Control Committee etc.

Program September 19th 07
Focus is less on Delay rescoring animation & more on different music + animation relationships. We have animation:
** Hifana release albums of rather crazy cut & paste hiphop electro glitch pop in a way only Japanese people can. They release their albums with an accompanying DVD of amazing quality animation+cut up video. W+K Tokyolab is the production house (remember the Toyota diesel animated ad?). It's great! A fair chunk of their Channel H DVD will be shown.
It's on first. get there at 8PM!**
Visions of Frank is a comic by Jim Woodring . They're amazingly surreal and feature a small number of main characters including a couple of "house-pets", a devil like creature and Frank. It's weird. Will be screening a half dozen animated versions of his stories done by "Japan's most audacious animators"! (Taruto Fuyama, art unit COCOA, Masaki Naito, Kanako Kawaguchi, Naomi Nagata, Tamapro/Drop). Several tracks were specially commissioned for the resulting DVD (which also has alternate soundtracks - keeping with Loony Tunes' theme). A must-see!
**
Ez3kiel are a French ElectroDub/jungle/rock/classical band who also produce accompanying DVDs to their albums. The digital animations (made in house!) are very advanced and quite lyrical. The DVDs themselves have incredibly imaginative and inventive interaction and intricacy (alliteration totally unintentional) akin to a mechanical faberge egg.
**
Norman Maclaren is one of the more famous pioneers of animation (with powerful messages too) who has influenced people as wide ranging as Pablo Picasso & George Lucas. The National Film Board Of Canada commissioned French DVJ Oof to rescore McLaren films for the Pompidou Center with a dancefloor edge. You'll see a 45 minute sample of the results.
**
Sun Ra & Dumbo: (Quoting Enjin "In 1941 Disney released Dumbo, an animation I didn't get to see until much later during my childhood in the 80s. The most memorable scene for me was the Pink Elephants sequence. Fast forward to my early adulthood of about 20 when I immersed myself in Sun Ra and his Arkestra, who just happened to make their own rendition of the "Pink Elephant song" And so today, while feeling a bit nostalgic, I synched the Pink Elephant animation from the original Dumbo movie with Sun Ra's music version. It gives it a much different feel than the original song" You'll see this gem.
** Mr.Scruff's music is animated cutely and very Mancunian like by Andy Carthy. Screening 2 of these tonight. Get your meat pies ready.
** Kloma give us 4 animated music tracks done in a Mclaren style with today's technology.
** Finally, the program is rounded off with Japanese animator
Ukawa's abstract & experimental work '
Scanning of Modulations'. Original music by the likes of Merzbow, Nerve Net Noise, Otomo Yoshide etc. This one'll be rescored by Delay.
