About Me

It's two men who come from distinct and varied musical backgrounds who were drawn to each other's ways of seeing and interpreting music and ideas. Associated with many of the bands who call (Brunswick Community Arts Warehouse) Irene their spiritual home, as well as the melting pot that is Brunswick and surrounds. Dance Contest is about finding meaning and critiquing people and ideas around us while not getting too fucking serious about it. That's why it doesn't always seem to make sense, or is disguised by crap metaphors, or has no words just inspiring and exciting music to dance to and throw things. The world IS a Dance Contest. When Politicians line up to say "Pick Me!", it's a fucking dance contest with no second prize. When animals, including humans, do their thing to attract other creatures to them, it's a giant and convoluted dance contest. Sometimes they actually dance. When corporate entities dangle carrots for us to buy, they do a little multi-billion dollar dance because it's worth it for them. Just like those freaks we listed in our influences, Dance Contest believes that meaningful music that deals with serious ideas doesn't have to be angry or dreary or dark. Nor does fun dance-able music have to be vacuous pop rubbish. It can inspire you to shake and dance and sing while you're working out what new worlds you're going to build inside the crumbling shell of the old world. Let's DANCE!also you check www.ringtonesociety.com maybe find latest hit single ringtone. Band Website: myspace.com/dancecontest
Band Members: adam & adrian : guitar, bass, synth/keyboard, percussion, programming, various other bits, drums, voice, percussion, melodica, yelling, dancing, rubber chickens, rotten vegetables, vodka, broken equipment. also venue managers telling us 'last song guys sorry'. also you in band make dance and heckle very much encourage yes?
Influences: talking heads, kraftwerk, neu!, devo, lcd soundsystem, tussle, fela kuti, antibalas, the cure, joy division, eno, pil, gang of four, bowie, tackhead, MC5. obviously many more, but you get the idea.
Sounds Like: various frequencies organised into rhythmic and melodic structures, some of which inspire various multi cellular lifeforms to dance, others to vomit, particularly seabirds - although maybe they would have done that anyway, we're not sure. also a number of political statements poorly disguised with crap metaphors.
