Across the Universe: A Film by Julie Taymor
(opens nationwide on September 28, 2007)
At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, Across the Universe is an original movie musical springing from the imagination of renowned director Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus, and the Broadway smash hit musical The Lion King") and writers Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais (The Commitments). A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock ’n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" (Bono) and "Mr. Kite" (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy – against all odds – to find their own way back to each other.

Frida: Bringing Frida Kahlo’s Life and Art to Film
Salma Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Director Julie Taymor pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo’s spine to her and Rivera’s trip to New York City, where Rivera’s political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton.

References to the Beatles and their worksBecause the movie is inspired by the Beatles and their works, easily recognizable references are laced throughout the story. The following information is recognizable or inferred in the trailer. The title is a reference to the John Lennon song "Across the Universe", the "O" in "Across" is shown as a strawberry on the marketing pictures, which is a reference to Lennon's song "Strawberry Fields Forever". The names of the main characters Jude, Lucy, Max, Doctor Robert, Mr. Kite, Prudence, Jojo, Desmond & Molly, and Sexy Sadie are references to the Beatles songs: "Hey Jude", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "Doctor Robert", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", "Dear Prudence", "Get Back", "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", and "Sexy Sadie" respectively. Jude is from Liverpool, as were all four Beatles. In the trailer, the songs used (in order of appearance) are "Girl", "With a Little Help from My Friends", "All You Need is Love", "Helter Skelter", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "Hey Jude", and "Across the Universe". Lucy says that they're in the middle of a revolution. This refers to what the international community regarded the United States to be under between 1965 and 1971, a "Second American Revolution" or more commonly known as the Counter-Cultural Revolution. Speculation: This could also tie into the Beatles' song "Revolution." The main characters get involved with the Peace Movement which was followed by millions at the time and was at the core of the Counter-Cultural Revolution. This may be influenced by John Lennon's work for world peace. For example, his famous bed-ins for peace and his anti-war songs ("Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance").
