About Me

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE Musical At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, Revolution Studios' Across the Universe is an original movie musical springing from the imagination of renowned director Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus, and the Broadway smash hit musical "The Lion King") and writers Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais (The Commitments).A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" (Bono) and "Mr. Kite" (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy – against all odds – to find their own way back to each other.Directed by: Julie TaymorScreenplay by: Dick Clement & Ian La FrenaisStory by: Julie Taymor & Dick Clement & Ian La FrenaisProduced by: Suzanne Todd Jennifer Todd Matthew GrossExecutive Producers: Derek Dauchy Rudd Simmons Charles NewirthCast: Evan Rachel Wood Jim Sturgess Joe AndersonThis film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for Some Drug Content, Nudity, Sexuality, Violence, and Language. Credits not finalJulie Taymor is a critically acclaimed, Tony Award-winning American director on Broadway and in film: she is known for her visual flair and brilliantly colorful costuming choices. Her greatest acclaim as a director for the stage has come from the wildly popular musical The Lion King, a 1997 adaptation of the animated film of that name. Taymor received two Tony Awards for her work on The Lion King, one for Direction and one for Costume Design, making her the first woman to receive a Tony award for directing a musical. Taymor has transitioned from the stage to the movie set in recent years, directing Titus in 1999 (an adaptation of the play Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare) and Frida in 2002. Both movies received positive reviews for their stylish filming: Frida was the more acclaimed of the two, garnering six Academy Award nominations and winning in two of the six categories (Best Makeup and Best Original Score). In 2006 she completed production of her latest movie, a musical set in the 1960s entitled Across The Universe, starring Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood. The premiere date is scheduled for September, 2007.Across the Universe Soundtrack:"Girl" Performed by Jim Sturgess (cast member)"Helter Skelter" Performed by Dana Fuchs (cast member)"Hold Me Tight" Performed by Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood, Lisa Hogg (cast members)"All My Loving" Performed by Jim Sturgess (cast members)"I Want To Hold Your Hand" Performed by TV Carpio (cast member)"With A Little Help From My Friends" Performed by Joe Anderson, Jim Sturgess & Dorm Buddies (cast members)"It Won't Be Long" Performed by Evan Rachel Wood (cast member)"I've Just Seen A Face" Performed by Jim Sturgess (cast member)"Let It Be" Performed by Carol Woods, Timothy T. Director Julie Taymor pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo’s spine to her and Rivera’s trip to New York City, where Rivera’s political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton.

References to the Beatles and their worksBecause the movie is inspired by the Beatles and their works, easily recognizable references are laced throughout the story. The following information is recognizable or inferred in the trailer. The title is a reference to the John Lennon song "Across the Universe", the "O" in "Across" is shown as a strawberry on the marketing pictures, which is a reference to Lennon's song "Strawberry Fields Forever". The names of the main characters Jude, Lucy, Max, Doctor Robert, Mr. Kite, Prudence, Jojo, Desmond & Molly, and Sexy Sadie are references to the Beatles songs: "Hey Jude", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "Doctor Robert", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", "Dear Prudence", "Get Back", "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", and "Sexy Sadie" respectively. Jude is from Liverpool, as were all four Beatles. In the trailer, the songs used (in order of appearance) are "Girl", "With a Little Help from My Friends", "All You Need is Love", "Helter Skelter", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "Hey Jude", and "Across the Universe". Lucy says that they're in the middle of a revolution. This refers to what the international community regarded the United States to be under between 1965 and 1971, a "Second American Revolution" or more commonly known as the Counter-Cultural Revolution. Speculation: This could also tie into the Beatles' song "Revolution." The main characters get involved with the Peace Movement which was followed by millions at the time and was at the core of the Counter-Cultural Revolution. This may be influenced by John Lennon's work for world peace. For example, his famous bed-ins for peace and his anti-war songs ("Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance").
