Ever since The Serpent duped Adam & Eve into taking a bite off the Apple from the Forbidden tree, Lucifer has always been whispering down to the deepest and most stygian recesses of the human mind – almost maternally caressing our thoughts with malevolence. Most chose to ignore this devilish murmur but not Shawn (aka Familyboy), to him this is merely an inclination inherent to our kind. More influenced by Ed Gein than Rakim, his brand of Hip-Hop resides in the more macabre and mostly ignored sect of the genre. Think R.A The Rugged Man, Gravediggaz or Brotha Lynch Hung. Now, defrag your brain of the bling-bling, hoes, guns and ebonics glorified by MTV and its peers, Familyboy’s raps about a range of topics that are seemingly out of B-graded movies and oft-kilter Japanese flicks.
Maybe it was the environment he was raised to that persuaded him to channel his own dementia into his music. Brought up in Kuala Lumpur’s less opulent borough, Jalan Ipoh; a town hedged by derelict buildings that seem to hinder any sort of socialization. It’s only normal for one to be so alienated in such a limiting setting that he finds something as a panacea to function properly. Familyboy is a direct by-product of the premise, with Hip-Hop as a crutch for him to walk properly. Chuck D once said Hip-Hop is the CNN of the streets, if that’s the metaphor to go by, then Familyboy’s music is the news report covering the infamous Columbine incident.
Heavily Sedated is a 9-track EP recorded under the supervision of Familyboy’s newly acquainted mentors; the indie-rap darlings, The Rebel Scum. Produced and guest-spotted by various members of his crew, Rogue Squadron (which is the brainchild of TRS), the EP is set to bring novelty into an already banal scene. This is the soundtrack to Kuala Lumpur’s dank and dark street corners where drunks, hobos and addicts hold their own private ecclesia. Whether the scene will accept his music or not is yet to be seen, much like the social deviances discussed in his lyrics, he is here to stay.
