On a lovely summer day back in 2006, I finally made it down to watch a group of friends play kickball at Humboldt Park. I'd been hearing about this for a couple of months and was told how much fun it was. Seeing how the park is only 5 blocks from my house I really had no excuse not to show up. When I got there, holly shit, nothing but insanity. I couldn't believe the level of shit talking, beer drinking and cute girls with tats. Oh, and they were all playing this silly children's game. I walked away stunned, amazed and slightly light headed.
One week later I'm sitting in a bar talking with my old friend and documentary film maker Ben, telling him this tale of a bunch of degenerates playing in the park and encouraging him to film it. His response, "Do it yourself!" He then told me to pitch the idea to him. Well, I've seen enough episodes of Entourage to know how to pitch a movie and got on with it. Ben was convinced, had all the gear necessary and sure enough we were out there the next weekend filming away.
The original concept was to make a short film about one team and their run through the playoffs and hopefully a championship. We shot the last of the season, many trips to the local watering holes, Prom (yes, they throw themselves a prom every year) and then started interviewing team members. The thought was that we'd have all this footage and I'd spend the winter learning FCP and editing together a short, 15 minute piece. Simple enough, right? WRONG.
Some asshole decides to break into Ben's place and steals a bunch of stuff, including a bag with all of the interview tapes. 12 tapes, 8 interviews and a months worth of work gone. Ouch. Serious punch in the stomach.
Well, we took a couple of months off to regroup and figure out just what we wanted to do. So we started from scratch, decided to follow the entire season, cover more than just one team and get as many friends as we could to come help out. It was a good summer.
So now we have hours (and hours) of footage, an amazing editor, top notch loggers, some very talented people working on music and an entire winter in Chicago to piece this all together.
