Grand Scheem Biography
THE WORLD IS TRULY A GHETTO, a world that - without bias - embraces and forsakes all. It builds a handful of heroes and destroys a universe of nobodies. At age 1, this environment is where Grand Scheem and his family began their new lives migrating from Karachi, Pakistan to a 1 bedroom apartment in Opa Locka, Florida (USA) a section of the Greater Miami area. Like many 3rd world immigrants, the marketing of America was a picture clip from Leave it to Beaver, but white picket fences are far from the reality. The negativity of growing up in lower-middle class America began to affect his household. Dad drinking, cheating on Mom soon after came the divorce. As a youth, Scheem remembers asking Why is this happening to me? - the confusion of being American AND living in a household that clings to certain cultural values can be overwhelming. Living life co-dependent on separated parents who refuse to believe that drugs, prostitution, & gun violence are everyday conditions that affect the youth of America, can only make you a stronger hustler. To his parents, the American Dream was having a stable job, because in Pakistan, there are no jobs. To him as an American, a job is being trapped. Acquiring capital and making investments was the ultimate career choice. Following the Jewish blueprint for success proved effective in the years to come. Then came 9/11. This tragedy affected more than just those that couldnt make it out of the buildings in fact, it affected the American perspective as a whole. Now the struggle of choosing a side to be on in a Black & White country is no longer the issue - Americans who did not know where Wisconsin was, now know about the Middle East; but with a skewed perspective. His plan is to change that perspective. The birth of Grand Scheem takes place in these Divided States of America. Facing the struggles of being a minority, home moved from Pakistan to New York to Florida to Texas to California and back. Scheem witnessed his first car-bombing at age fourteen, an episode he later recalls vividly, and the bombers werent too intelligent instead of hitting their target (the police station) they blew up everything on the other side of the street. A man ran out into the street on flames and literally burned to death in the middle of the road. About four hours later, the Minister (equivalent to the Mayor) shows up to the scene, gives the family of the victim a briefcase of money, and that was that.Even the harsh surroundings of the Middle East couldnt prepare Grand Scheem for what he would face in America. In Pakistan, minority is determined by religion Grand Scheem was born a Catholic minority in an Islamic republic. In America, he remains a minority in a segregated society, determined by skin color and culture. Having to be searched at airports, being stared at in skyscrapers, being around constant racial slurs & hate crimes, is the result of constant media misrepresentation. Explains Scheem, The goal here is not money, but really to impact the perspectives of those who are oblivious to the truth. The stereotype of terrorism, though, is only one of many topics Grand Scheem addresses. Getting America and the world familiar with the face you see on television is important know your enemy before you hate him. you even have groups like Green Day, Linkin Park, and Rage Against the Machine that not only see certain issues, but act on them in a major way, explains Scheem.Facing the same oppression that many minorities in America continue to battle is why Grand Scheem chooses Hip Hop to speak to those living the struggle. In its purest form, the Black community used Hip Hop to voice their disposition in America. Scheem influences, such as NWA, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Tupac, and Nas used Hip Hop as a line of communication to the people, and so shall Grand Scheem. As Hip-Hop - and music in general - reverts back to its REALISTIC state of mind, you can count on Grand Scheem to contribute, "People sometimes say you have to scream to be heard...but I do it differently - I just scheem till I'm heard!"

GRAND SCHEEM'S 1st INTERVIEW By Adam Bernard
Ever since 9/11, being Middle Eastern has become associated with being a terrorist. The reality, of course, is that most Middle Eastern people, both in America and abroad, have no ties with terrorist organizations and are simply hard working people looking to get by just like everyone else. In light of this, a rapper by the name of Grand Scheem wants to start giving facts about his people to replace the myths. His message is simple, yet powerful, and comes in the form of a rap song.A Pakistani American, Scheem was inspired to jump on the mic and write The Greatest Scheem Ever Sold, a song that tells what living in a post-9/11 society is like from a Pakistani point of view. Though some of the lyrics may seem edgy, Scheem doesnt feel they are any more controversial than those of other socially conscious artists.Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Scheem, 28, now resides in Miami. It was while working on promotions with Interscope Records in Dallas that he felt the need to pick up the mic. Marketing wasnt rewarding enough, Scheem explains, despite having a platinum plaque on his wall for his work promoting the Marshall Mathers LP. I was holding myself back from what I truly wanted to do. This isnt about a dollar sign, its about trying to fulfill some sort of karma. When Scheem talks about fulfillment he isn't just referring to music.Though he was born in Pakistan, he was raised in the U.S. until he was ready to go to high school. It was then that he decided to go back to his homeland to learn more about his personal history. I went back overseas to try to gain a little perspective of what it was like to be on that side of the fence, says Scheem. Everything I speak about in terms of my roots, even though Im as American as apple pie and coffee, Ive seen it. I witnessed my first car bombing at the age of 15.Though some may view a car bombing as a huge culture shock, Scheem points out that the biggest difference between living in Pakistan and the U.S. is that in Pakistan, people move around in the shadows out there. Everything is monitored. But even though it has its shortcomings, Scheem still notes that he loves his place of birth. It wouldnt be my prime vacation spot, but its definitely where Im from and Ill stand up and be proud of where Im from.Having voiced his Pakistani pride, Scheem also explains he has a lot of pride in his current home country. I understand why its important to appreciate America, he notes and because I appreciate America I think its important to take us forward as a people. This is the prime motivating factor for Scheem when creating songs like The Greatest Scheem Ever Sold.Scheem labels his music as information rather than controversial, but even so, The Greatest Scheem Ever Sold" was pulled from the "Fahrenheit 911" soundtrack, supposedly due to its content. Though he doesnt want to dwell on the situation, Scheem feels he knows what the real problem was. "Not to push buttons or anything, but Michael Moore can be controversial, yes, but hes not Osama Bin Laden being controversial... when you put a Pakistani man on an album cover or video, thats when it becomes an issue and people start asking questions.People arent just asking questions, however, theyre requesting the song. Like most socially conscious songs, The Greatest Scheem Ever Sold is gaining momentum through college radio, showing up at number one on more and more stations around the country as the weeks go on. One reason the song has been doing so well, according to Adams State College Music Director Jon Trinidad, is that it's a grass roots effort. "It's honest.Benny Black, Urban Music Director at Trinity College, feels the song is important and understands where Scheem is coming from. I don't think a lot of people have really given a lot of thought to [the Pakistani American] community and how [9/11] affected their community. For Scheem, Black is one of the rapidly growing group of people who understand what the Grand Scheem concept is all about. The name Grand Scheem is a play on the phrase "grand scheme of things," or the complete picture -- and the complete picture of how the Pakistani community has been affected by 9/11 is really what Scheem is looking to give people. This is the story of millions of people here in America who have pretty much gone unnoticed until somebody ran a plane through a skyscraper," he says. "Youve seen em. Youve seen em at 7-11, youve seen em on "The Simpsons," but that may not be all they are. Scheem also says that one of his goals for his music is to let America know that, "We deserve to have a voice in the country just like everybody else.Quite a few people have been noticing that voice, including Mansfield University Professor Thomas Caulfield, who has playing the song for his class. I'm trying to give an alternate perspective, show some voices of subversion and show my students that you have to give all perspectives consideration, the professor explains. Justin Aydelotte, the Music Director of Mansfield Universitys radio station, remembers handing Caulfield the single saying, We traded some music and I handed him the single. He gives me a call the next day and says 'Wow this is really great.A college professor using a rap song as a teaching tool usually only happens with extremely well known artists like 2Pac, whos also had an array of books written about his life. For a professor to choose Scheems song, a song by an artist who is only just starting to gain a buzz, is an indicator of what Scheem might be able to accomplish if the right people start listening. If I get to put that voice out there, thats whats gonna make me happy. If I know when I close my eyes Ive done something as an American to try to better those who look like me, that makes me feel good. Scheems been going to bed happy a lot these days.
