I am a Swedish jazz piano player who plays with different bands and artists. I also compose and arrange music for various contexts. In addition to jazz I devote myself to folkmusic, classical music and pop/rock/funk.
BIOGRAPHY:
I grew up in the Västmanland/Dalarna-region in Sweden and my first musical input came from my mother who played Swedish folk music on the violin. During my schooldays I played drums and listened mostly to hard rock as well as synth music, but I actually bought my very first classical albums at a very early age.
My first piano lessons concentrated on classical music. It was only at the age of 13 I discovered jazz music through my piano teacher, who introduced me to ragtime, stride piano and boogie woogie. I also developed an interest in classical orchestral music, in particular the rudiments of scoring and arranging for a multitude of instruments, which I have pursued till this day. Alongside the piano, which was and has always been my main instrument, I learned the accordeon, the guitar, the trombone and a little violin.
I started my first jazz band Swing Seven in 1994 and moved to Uppsala in 1995 to begin teacher studies. There I spent four years playing Swedish folk music on the accordeon in V-Dala Spelmanslag, a folk music ensemble. At the same time I took private lessons in scoring and composition as well as jazz piano for various teachers, eg Gösta Rundqvist, Lasse Ericsson. I also studied music 3 years at the Musicology Department of Uppsala, and spent some time in Germany as well as one whole year in Brighton/London, United Kingdom furthering my music studies. During the time in England I played with Swedish-born trumpet player Kjell Åke Berglund, drummer Spike Wells and singer Matty Eeles, and I composed a number of works for symphony orchestra in the meantime.
I’ve been freelancing as a jazz piano player ever since 1999, joining various groups on various occasions, but I started the Daniel Lantz Trio in 1999, which has become my main vehicle until today. The trio has performed on its own, or it has teamed up with soloists such as flute player Staffan Hallgren, trumpet player Bosse Broberg, sax player Lennart Ã…berg and others. In 2004 I returned from the UK to settle down in Uppsala, Sweden, and became self-employed, and I have devoted myself full-time to music since then, above all doing live jazz gigs, but also doing composition and arranging for various ensembles, choirs as well as scoring for theatre productions. In addition to the Daniel Lantz Trio, I am now part of different bands of various sizes and genres.
Most of my time today is devoted to jazz on the piano, even though I love crossing over to other genres every now and then - I’ve always loved good music from almost any genre, no matter how diverse - as long as it’s good. Occasionally I delve into folk music, pop/rock/funk as well as latin, and I also switch from the piano to the accordeon and the guitar every once in a while. When it comes to jazz piano players, the impressionistic Bill Evans as well as the bluesy Oscar Peterson have had a strong impact on me, not to mention all the other pianists with a distinctive sound of their own, eg Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Barron etc, but my own style is derived from a variety of sources.
Today, musicians I play/have played with include: IN SWEDEN: Staffan Hallgren, Roland Keijser, Bosse Broberg, Olle Thunström, Daniel Olsson, Mattias Åström, Curt Andersson, Gus Dahlberg, Lennart Åberg, Claes Janson, Bertil Fernqvist, Sharon Dyall, LaGaylia Frazier, Kari Sjöstrand, Carin Lundin, Anita Söderberg, Emily McEwan, Marcus Sundbom, Peter Lind, Karl-Martin Almqvist, Niklas Fernqvist, Karl Olandersson, Kenji Rabson, Dicken Hedrenius, Ulf Johansson Werre, Erik Ojala, Roger Nordling, Ali Djeridi, Anna Einarsson, Susanne Ottebring, Moa Killander, Viktoria Colonna, Ambjörn Hugardt, Anders Gahnold, Carlos de Rada, Johan Ståhlgren, Johan Timan, Karina Kampe, Daniel Olsson, Mattias Åström, Per V Johansson, Nils Hübinette.
