About Me

History of the Ice House...The facility was built in 1908 at the corner of 1004 W. Page Street in Oak Cliff, to house the Pure Ice and Storage Comapny and soon after changed ownership and was renamed Consumer Ice Company. Through the innovative technology of the time the Consumer Ice Company met the demands for ice from the 80,000 residents of Oak Cliff during its peak of business in the mid 1920s.The Consumer Ice Company was so popular that they established an on site storefront where they sold ice and other consumer goods. After much success the Consumer Ice Comapny was renamed the Southland Ice Company which was the parent of the Totem Convenience stores that later evolved into today's 7-Eleven chain. The building was vacated in the late 1970s and remained dormant for many years. In 1997 the Ice House Cultural Center (IHCC) began with funding from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, and subsequent funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Levi Strauss Foundation. The Ice House Cultural Center is part of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and provides a Latino-focused venue to promote arts and cultural events that reflect the diversity of Oak Cliff and the surrounding neighborhoods.
