*KALJU T.. PRODUCER/MIXER/SONGWRITER

About Me

Hey All! My name is KAL, I'm a Producer/Mixer/Songwriter. I am based in Melbourne Australia. I have been producing for 16 years. I started at a studio in Sth Yarra called "Platinum" (that was in 1989). While there I was lucky enough to work with some of the best bands, producers and engineers of the day including....Split Enz, Crowded House, Schnell Fenster, Straightjacket Fits, Hunters & Collectors, Boom Crash Opera just to name a few. As far as producers/Engineers go, I worked with Bob Clearmountain, Don Gehman, Joe Hardy, Youth, Mark Freegard, Gavin MacKillop, Nick Launay, Nick Mainsbridge, ...As I said a most fortunate upbringing learning from Artists such as these. In 1992 I scored my first mainstream mix job, that was a track called "Talking Sly" by a band called "The Sharp", I went on to work on all of the bands records. That single went top 10, it spawned a Gold Album, and I was nominated for Engineer of the year at the ARIA awards(final 5). This started a non stop run of albums for me till today. In 1993 I worked with Crowded House on the Together Alone album, and was taken to New Zealand by producer Youth to work on the Killing Joke album Millenium. Returning from there I went straight onto Co Producing/Engineering a double Album for Boom Crash Opera called Born/Born Again. This was a super experience that really turned my head upside down, and prepared me for the next creative stage. From there I started a project with Peter Jones (crowded house drummer) & Barry Palmer(Hunters & Collectors), which went on to become Dead Star with Caroline Kennedy(Plums) as vocalist, we made a few albums and created some lovely pop moments which went on to become radio Favs. At this time I also hooked up with a group of people called "The Mavis's". We made 3 Albums together, the first "Venus Returning" gave birth to some brilliant tracks, Moon Drone Gold, Thunder, Lost, and Box. This was a fantastic record all recorded and Mixed in 10 days, (a song a day). The next album Pink Pills, had the singles Naughty Boy and Cry. Cry became the most played song on Australian Radio, and achieved Gold status, and so did the Album. I did alot of work around this period (almost too much to remember, check out blog for a full discography just for shits and grins). Around this time I Produced an Album by a Rad little band from perth called "Effigy" we made the "Century Collapsing" album, which had the singles Caught, Suspicion Bells, and Singer. Great band and along with The Mavis's albums, it became one of my all time favourites. In 1998 I started work with 28 days, I made the Kid Indestructable EP and then "Upstyle Down". The tracks Sucker, Song for Jasmine and Rip it up were all singles. Rip it up went gold, the Album Debuted No:1 and went on to sell double Platinum. In that year I was nominated for the ARIA's(final 5) again for 28 days, The Mavis's and Felicty Hunter. Shortly after this I made an album for Body Jar called "How it works" this album was full of great stuff, it went Gold and the single "Not the Same" became most popular and also ended up on the Tony Hawk 2 game. Around this time I also made an album for Superheist called "The Prize recruit" I was nominated for Producer and Engineer of the year (final 5) at the Arias once again. Between 2002/2003 I took time off to de-compress, and only really started back in 2004 making records again. In that time I have worked with Infusion(six feet above yesterday), The D4 (outta my head) Evermore, Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia Barnes, All Left Out, Neil Finn,Trial Kennedy, The Hotlies, Horsell Common, Capeside, Josh Abrahams, Diana Anaid, K-Oscillate, to name a few, I now have my own studio ( Studio One, in an old Church in Collingwood Melbourne) it has an SSL 4000 G+ console, a 24 trk Studer 2" and Protools. I love it, and allows me the freedom to work very closely with the Artists that I love. The control room is true and with my NHT speakers(yes!) provide the mix of pleasure. I am a big fan of spontanious creativity, and I have just completed my Masters Degree in Music. (@ QUT).Anywayz, I hope that the above doesn't come across sounding like too much of a toss, but I'm not sure how to write it any other way. With any enquiries regarding Producing/Songwriting/Mixing or recording, please contact Sarah Guppy @ This Much Talent UK. She is in my top 12 as Sarah G.with much Peace and Respect........KAL
