Nine in 10 Americans polled regard child abuse as a serious problem, yet only 1 in 3 reported abuse when confronted with an actual situation. Infants who survive shaken baby syndrome will have neurological or mental disability, including mental retardation or cerebral palsy. These conditions may not fully appear until the age of six.
