Return to Sender
A path to healing through therapeutic letter writing
By Miriam Brown
Like many woman I carried the baggage left behind by people in my past (family members, ex’s, co-workers and even friends). For many years I was unable to free myself from the burden because I simply did not know how or where to drop the bags.
When I became aware of how these past hurts were still profoundly affecting my life and current relationships, I knew that it was time to confront my past. Shortly thereafter I sat down to write a letter that I knew I would never mail. I wrote directly to the person in my past who had hurt me the most. I cried and wrote and cried some more until my soul was staring me in the face from that sheet of paper. It was incredible! I saw emotions that I would had never known that I was feeling.
Although unpleasant, some situations are easier to face head on such as a co-worker gossiping about you. But what about a relationship that ended with the other person’s infidelity or serious abuse that you endured in your childhood or as an adult? Finally, the person in your past who may have hurt you the most may have been you.
I found this to be such a powerful outlet that I shared and inspired many other women to begin the healing process with this form of never to be mailed therapeutic letter writing.
