About Me

I've been writing and singing songs for a while now. Most of my stuff I recorded in London (being an English gent), but all my playing's been in the States, which maybe shows up in the sound. These tracks are some of the songs that came out along the way. It's all part of the long journey, right? Song wise, I try to keep it simple. Easy to say - doing it's another thing. 'How Long' has a slightly skanky, gritty vibe. I'd been spending time in the Southern States and around New Orleans. We recorded that song on an old Trident series desk, with a bottle of 'Gentleman Jack', and a selection of fine guitars on a very hot summer night. 'Who needs Love' was written in New York. I was playing a lot of clubs with my band, freezin' my ass off, and busting A strings. Yep, A strings. Either I was going at it a little hard, or I got a heavy right hand. Or I was buying the wrong guages. There's a bit of dislocation in that song, I guess. I went home to London and recorded it - mixed it on Bob Marley's old desk in west London, not far from the scrubs they used to go and play soccer. I was a studio junkie, but that was something else. Man, the vibrations that must've run up those channels. I think that recording has a warmth to its sound - maybe the circuits were still blessed, I don't know...'Nowhere Slow' was from a different batch of writing, a little simpler, more stripped down. A lot of people liked the lyric. It's kind of 'Well, I guess life is kind of fleeting and maybe we're all screwed, but you know what? The world keeps on spinning'. I wrote Shotgun when I was livin' on the Gulf of Mexico, right by the ocean, livin' like a beach bum. I think the sun done fried my brain after a while. The song's supposed to be ironic. Ya know? I'm not really happy in the dark! Well, not that happy...A lot of great musicians worked on the songs, produced and generally helped out - notably Andy Wright, my long-time producer (check him out with Jeff Beck, Simply Red, etc) and Steve Howard, who ended up movin' to Australia after workin' with me. Why was that, again? I'm not listing everybody else right here, but you can take it as read that I'm no different to any other singer-songwriter - I need all the help I can get! Y'all know who ya are. I love ya! Nowadays, I'm living in the south of France. I'm writing a lot. You can check me out at among my exalted brothers & sisters at indiehighway.com, or catch me on radio shows like 'The Songwriters Network.' You can even buy a piece of me at iTunes day or night whenever ya feel the need. But most of all I wanted to put up some of the music so it's out there doing its thing. I hope ya like it. TPB.
