I love trying to write songs, and even though I'm not a big fan of my own voice, it’s still a very fun hobby and keeps the creative side of my brain stimulated. I go to some of the open mic nights in the area every week, and although I don’t think I’ll ever be good enough to get up there and sing, I enjoy watching the performers, and have gotten to know some of them. They are a great bunch of people, and a big influence to me in my music.
I made all the wrong choices when I was young. Got involved with many different drugs and started using needles. By the time I was in my early twenties, I was shooting meth every day. I still had enough brain cells left to see where my life was headed, so I moved back in with my parents for a while to try and straighten my life out. I met a girl who lived next door to my parents with her sister and hooked up with her. I started screwing up again, and would disappear for days at a time and have to hide the needle marks when I came back. When my girlfriend got pregnant, I knew I had to do something drastic, so I had a kid, got married, and joined the army (in that order).
Now, I have my GED, an associate’s degree equivalent in electronics, an associate’s degree equivalent in computer programming, and have not touched drugs since. I’ve been married for over twenty four years; have three children, and a grand child.
I have gotten back into my music over the past few years, and have learned more than I ever did when I was doing drugs all those years. I get a better high from the music itself than any drug. Music is my drug now.
So… if your thinking about doing drugs… take my advice… go buy a guitar instead. You’ll thank me later.
