About Me

A New Yorker raised in East Tennessee, Jason Hart has a sensibility at once both urban and rural. At the age of 8 he attended a performance of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar", which deeply affected him. From that moment on, he has devoted himself to the pursuit of musical expression. As a child, Jason won numerous piano competitions throughout the South but eventually became bored with the discipline of learning the 'classics' and started writing his own songs. Early compositions were influenced by an odd mixture of musical theater and 'progressive' rock groups like Yes, Rush and Genesis. To this day, Jason's writing references elements of these diverse styles, as well as his favorite singer/songwriters, from Joni Mitchell and Elton John to Tori Amos and Rufus Wainwright. After a time writing jingles and music for the theater, a job playing keyboards for a Spanish pop star and writing top-40 hits in Spain (as well a stint teaching English to actress Penelope Cruz), and a period developing a short-lived group called "Dramapop", Jason decided to throw caution to the wind and move forward as a solo artist.Several years of intensive labor and thought culminated in the birth of his full-length CD entitled "If I Were You": twelve dynamic compositions that bravely convey a lifetime of experience and emotion.Songs like the title track "If I Were You" put a new spin on the subject of obsession; "I Won't Blame Myself" is an anthem for victims of childhood sexual abuse; "Beautiful Nightmare" is a funky ode to ambivalence; "Marco Polo" is a story about the search for connection in the big city; "Don't Fall" and "Sometimes the Heart" are 'twisted lullabies' about family dynamics...every song a small universe unto itself. He is currently focused on developing his latest musical project, which is firmly rooted in the progressive/art rock genre. Jason was for many years the pianist for the Mercury Prize-Winning group Antony and the Johnsons, and most recently has toured as keyboardist and back-up vocalist for Rufus Wainwright. He has also performed extensively with Spanish pop icon Nacho Cano, as well as the acclaimed French singer/songwriter Keren Ann. Recently he has performed with V2 artist Tom McRae and Interscope artist Carina Round, both at the Living Room in New York. Jason has appeared with Moby, Lou Reed, Elton John, Liza Minelli, the B52's, Kris Kristofferson and other pop luminaries, in addition to up-and-coming artists such as Kaki King and the Last Town Chorus. He has been seen on David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Good Morning New York, Sabado Gigante (Mexico), the Frank Skinner show and the Jools Holland show (UK), plus many television performances in Spain. He has performed as a support act for Rufus Wainwright, Keren Ann, Marillion, The Machine (Pink Floyd Tribute), The Last Town Chorus, and others.
