Mansun

Life it's a series of compromises

About Me

Mansun leapt out of nowhere (Chester to be exact) in 1995 with a series of EPs combining grungy guitars with electronic beats that quickly built them a dedicated fanbase. They followed these in 1997 will the surprise no. 1 album Attack of the Grey Lantern, a synth-heavy oddity that combined prog influences with a dark 80's sound that sounded unlike much of their work of the previous year. This was followed in 1998 by Six, a psychedelic masterpiece that confounded journalists and fans alike with its intricate melodies, counter melodies and decidely unique approach to songwriting, but remains an undisputed classic and is cherished by many as one of the most unhinged pop albums in living memory. Little Kix followed in 2000, returning to the Grey Lantern sound but with a world weary soul. Here is where the story sadly ended, but sessions for their 4th album have been released on the Kleptomania compilation, along with various EP tracks (though not many of my favourites, but that's the way it goes when there are so many songs available). This site is intended as an introduction to a side of Mansun not often seen, as their live interpretations of songs were often drastically different to the recorded takes. I also include a sample of their EP tracks, where they really let themselves go. The group were extremely generous with their material but did themselves no favours by hiding some of their greatest work on the flipside to their singles. The great thing about Mansun was how they changed their sound with each release (each *EP* release every couple of months). If I can work out how to add 5 songs *and enable downloads* I'll add something from their later period, such as Comes As No Surprise live or the gorgeous Golden Stone, as I'm missing their less intense side here, but I heartily recommend the other Mansun sites for anyone interested in more. My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Paul Draper (vocals, guitars, synths); Dominic Chad (lead guitar, backing vocals, various other odd sounds); Stove King (bass); Andie Rathbone (drums). How could such an accomplished band just appear out of the blue like that? Dominic and Andie could possibly lay claim to being among the most technically proficient musicians of the time (you try learning the guitar lines), but played so sympathetically to the songs that you didn't realise what great playing you were listening to.
Influences: Bowie, Magazine, King Crimson, anything!

I`m not Mansun!

Sadly... : ( I did have the pleasure of meeting them once though, and seeing them play 8 (I think, if not 9) times. They were the most approachable of bands, and really lovely guys. I can't stress eno...

Another Mansun site? And why not?!

You can never have too much Mansun. I don't know how often I'll be returning to manage this site, but had the idea last night of uploading each EP one by one in chronological order at some point....
