The Publishing AlternativeWhen you get frustrated with responses from record labels, consider a publishing company as an alternative.
by Nadine CondonPublishing companies can be terrific alternatives to approaching major labels. They are an underused resource in the music industry today. More concerned with artist development, a publishing company will spend time and resources helping a potentially valuable songwriter develop. If you have good songwriting chops, they are an extremely viable entree into the music business and can help support you through your development.Publishing companies are in the business of songs. They buy the rights to songs or portions of the rights to songs written by songwriters. They then sell those songs to other artists for recording purposes, commercial use in film, TV, or advertising, and other mercantile avenues. As the songwriter, your songs are the actual currency of a publishing company. This is a tremendously powerful position from which to negotiate.Once you get over your fear of losing ownership of your published songs (an urban myth), an extremely collaborative creative and commercial relationship can be established. In today's sophisticated business world and all the avenues for self-education, there is little to fear of someone stealing your publishing like the horror stories of the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. Publishing companies are also more flexible in offering an array of different business arrangements, from single-song deals to multiple-year deals. Standardized contracts can be tailored to fit your situation more easily at a publishing company than at a record label.A good partnership with a solid publishing company can provide not only tremendous assistance with a recording career (the publisher can help you get a record contract after establishing your songwriting credibility), but also enormous cash value because of the film, TV, and song-pitching resources. Depending on the strength of your material, the company will take your songs to film and TV music supervisors, album producers, and A&R reps, when appropriate. When you get frustrated with responses from record labels, consider a publishing company as an alternative. They don't care about your local following, your stage show, how your demo is produced, or whether you have a marketing strategy or plan. They only care if you have good songs. Melissa Etheridge, Stephan Jenkins, and Teitur are just a few of the artists who obtained publishing contracts before major label record contracts.Contact a publishing company in the same manner you contact a label. Research them to find out which companies represent which songwriters. Find referrals through other musicians, lawyers, managers, producers, studios, and songwriters. Call before you send any material. -- --LINK THIS ADDRESS TO YOUR PAGE!!
