I'd like to meet:
"Phol and Wodan
rode to the woods,
Then, Balder's foal
wrenched his foot.
Then did Sinthgunt enchant it,
(so did) Sunna her sister,
then did Freya enchant it.
(so did) Fulla her sister,
then did Wodan enchant it,
as he well could:
If a bone-wrenching,
if a blood-wrenching,
if a limb-wrenching:
Bone to bone,
blood to blood,
Limb to limb,
As if bonded."
- Merseburger Zaubersprüche
"You know, if you have a friend, one whom you trust,
go to see him often;
for brushwood grows, and tall grass,
on the road which no man treads."
- Havamal
Music:
Various neofolk, post-industrial, shoegazer, martial, neoclassical, atonal, darkambient, dream pop and early 4AD artists.
Recommended music pages on myspace - and why:
Apoptose
Bleak and cold as a stone on the edge of dawn, without time and words - If I had a choice of 5 albums I could take with me and none others, the first Apoptose album would definitely be one of them.
Batcheeba
Cut up, glitched, gutted, packed, processed and sang over, Batcheeba's jagged soundscapes produce clinical visions.
Desiderii Marginis
Emotional and fulfilling, my favorite darkambient artist.
Die Weisse Rose
A close friend adept at creating a parallel sense of melancholy and tension, I do most of the visual art for this project.
In Gowan Ring
Like a blurry old photograph or a dusty windowsill, the now near-legendary music of Be'irth evokes memories and emotion like few artists can. "Hazel Steps" is particularly recommended.
In Ruin
Maintaining a quiet persona and an obscure first release, In Ruin create a particularly heart felt, personal and honest sort of neofolk. Something particularly unique for an American group.
Jagerblut
No matter how a force attempts to stomp something out, if it is rooted firmly enough, if the blood continues to flow, it cannot be destroyed.. And so it goes with the odd and celebrated Bavarian folk customs that survive to this day.
Kammarheit
Cold, melancholic but swirling and sparkling music from Sweden. Like a branch in a wind. Also, always a friendly guy.
:Of The Wand And The Moon:
A long time favorite of mine, really inspiring and extremely moving music. Particularly "Sonnenheim" - which has made its way into my top 5. Highly recommended!
Solblot
A Swedish project with no releases yet but very promising. Quite original in their approach, Solblot represent a face of Sweden few know anymore.
Sturmpercht
Strange sounds in the Bavarian woods, drunken hunters, ancient Alpine pagan parades enveloped in surreal, dreamily melodic folk hymns bordering between darkly humorous and infinitely noble. Unique - recommended!
Valery's Kin
Image-inducing and misanthropic rural folk music played with some of the most fixating and memorable melodies I've ever had the pleasure to hear.
Waldteufel
Greatly ancestral and gloriously bizarre, Markus Wolff's eccentric work as Waldteufel not only raises eyebrows but also inspires.
Werkraum
Enchanting atmosphere mixed with extremely melodic early music-influenced neofolk hymns make for a memorable and warm experience.
Movies:
Film is a major interest of mine.
Heroes:
Arminius, Boudica, Volundr/Weyland, Jefferson, D'Annunzio.
