A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was a young rabble-rowsing lad of 12, in need of direction. On his 13th birthday, he was presented with a little album by Iron Butterfly called "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". His world would never be the same. Soon he was exploring Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Heep, Steppenwolf, The Stones, The Beatles and The Doors. By this time, his tastes were expanding rapidly to include ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, The Who, Steve Miller, Alice Cooper, Eagles, Allman Bros, Floyd, Johnny & Edgar Winter, CSN&Y, Kansas, Clapton, Winwood, The Tubes, Billy Joel, Humble Pie, Kraftwerk, BS&T, Chicago, Hendrix, Queen, The Blasters, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, Creedence, ELO, Steely Dan, Guess Who, J. Geils, Mott the Hoople, Jeff Beck, Alan Parsons, Springsteen, Aerosmith, Tull, Talking Heads, Wishbone Ash, Dylan, Moody Blues, Tom Petty. But it wasn't untill 1973, and the release of a little ditty called "Overnite Sensation", did he truely see the light. Who was this guy, with the guitar riffs from another world, the irreverent lyrics that would make a longshoreman blush, the take on this world like we've never seen before? Well, it was Mr. Frank Zappa, of course. A true original. Taken from us too soon. I'll be listening to "Watermelon In Easter Hay" and "Strictly Genteel" till I take my last breath. Take a listen to "Sheik Yerbouti" or "Joe's Garage", if you wanna hear a masterpiece. Nowadays, the young lad now in his 40's, listens to new releases from Peter Gabriel, Foo Fighters, Yes (still goin' strong, after 36 years), Outkast, Santana, Dave Matthews, Green Day, Brian Setzer, Steve Vai, Springsteen.....I even hear that Townshend & Daltrey are in the studio again. Long Live Rock, Be It Dead Or Alive.
I'm a Sci-Fi fanatic. I like the oldies: "Day The Earth Stood Still". "Them", "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers", "Tarantula", "War of the Worlds". Then came the 70's, and the dawn of realistic special effects: "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Close Encounters", "Planet of the Apes", "Outland", "ET", "Alien", "Star Wars: Episode IV", "Star Trek". Now we're in the digital age: "The Matrix". "Terminator", "Stargate", "Predator", "Independance Day", Nothing like a rowsing action/adventure flick, as well: Clint, Arnold, Will Smith, Bruce Willis. I've also been known to sit through the occasional "chick-flick", for the benefit of a lovely lady.
A few lines from some of my faves: "Chevron 7...Locked", "Oh, yer gonna talk, scummer...or you'll take a beatin'", "Data...Make it so", "You're gonna get my foot, dumbass", "What is your favorite swear word?", "You don't have to fuggin' love me, but you WILL respect me", "Denny Crane", "Aye carumba, man", "Vic, they're gonna know we hit the money train", "We were brought here by this island", "...and now it's time for 'New Rules' ", "I'm rich, Bi-otch"
