About Me

1
Nickname?
The lads just call me Ed or Edwin. In Holland they always call me Sar
2
Favourite holiday destination?
I like Italy very much. I like the food, the culture and the nice weather of course. I used to live in Turin when I played for Juventus, but my favourite places would be Rome and the Amalfi Coast
3
Favourite meal?
Japanese food, I like everything Japanese, Sushi, Spicy beef, everything
4
Favourite drink?
During the day I drink something imported from Holland. It's a syrup that you add water to. It comes in lots of different fruit flavours but I tend to go for strawberry. At home I drink that all the time. For a night out a glass of wine is always nice, white or red depending on the occasion
5
Favourite film?
The Godfather series, they are classics
6
Favourite film star?
Al Pacino
7
Last CD you bought?
Razorlight's new album
8
What's your favourite hobby away from football?
I have a family, so I don't get lots of time for hobbies! My daughter is six and my son is eight so I like to play with them or help them with homework when they get back from school. I really like golf, but I don't play that often. When I come home I play with the computer and check my e-mails. I also play on consoles like the PSP, but not too much. Certainly not as much as the young guys do nowadays
9
Who's your best mate in football?
It was nice to have Ruud van Nistelrooy here in Manchester, but he has gone to Real Madrid now. Frank de Boer is a good friend too; I played with him for a long time at Ajax. I am in touch with both of them quite a lot
10
Who's the most famous person you have met?
We meet famous people quite a lot, but I'm not into all that stuff. I did meet Prince Harry two years ago at a restaurant in southwest London. I had a very nice conversation with him for a couple of hours. That was a good experience
11
What's your favourite car?
At the moment, an Audi S8. It is a family car but it's also very sporty. It can work both ways, as a nice car for the family but you can also hit the gas when you want to!
12
What is your favourite magazine or newspaper?
I really like lifestyle magazines like GQ or Esquire, because they have a bit of everything: they have fashion, gadgets, holidays, and nice girls. It is better than some other magazines which are over the top like FHM. At home I read the Daily Mail
13
What's your most annoying habit?
I don't have one. No, maybe I watch too much football. That could be annoying
14
What do you like to do after training?
I take my time after training, some guys are quick into the showers but I stay out for a bit or go to the gym. Then I shower, go home, then pick the kids up from school. When the kids have gone to bed I just relax, maybe watch a movie or visit friends
15
If you weren't a footballer what would you be?
I think I'd be a guy who works in or owns a sports store - that idea has always interested me. Or maybe I would be a PE teacher, definitely involved in sports in some way
16
Any superstitions?
Not really. I always do the same warm-up before the match, but I think that is necessary so I'm ready for the game. I also put my left shin pad .. my right, but I think you'd find 85 per cent of footballers all do that
17
What's your most prized possession?
My family
18
What kind of a car do you have?
I have an Audi S8 and a BMW convertible 6.5
19
Are you good at any other sports?
I am average at a lot of sports. I play a bit of golf, I'm not bad at tennis and I like to play squash, you can only play that in the off-season though, because it really takes it out of you. I am shocking at basketball though, that's for sure. Everyone thinks I must be good because of my height but I'm shocking!
20
Who would you most like to meet?
Nelson Mandela. I missed out on meeting him a couple of times and would love to have the chance. The first time was when the national team played against South Africa in 1996 and they got to meet him then, but I was with my club. Then last year, Man United were in South Africa during the pre-season and they got to meet him, but I was still on holidays after the World Cup. I have visited Robben Island, where he was imprisoned and I have also read his book. The only thing that is missing is meeting the man himself
Thanks for visiting!

'I have two children myself. If you then come into a hospital, and you see children that are ill, then you realize just how very sad it is. I find giving considerably good support to an ill child gives that child a good feeling.'

Edwin van der Sar, born 29 October 1970 in Voorhout, is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper. He is captain of the Dutch national team and plays club football for Manchester United in the English Premier League.
Edwin van der Sar began his career at hometown club Foreholte and then VV Noordwijk, where he was spotted by Ajax Amsterdam. After going through the ranks of Ajax's youth system, he enjoyed a long and successful stint in the senior side, winning the 1991-92 UEFA Cup and the 1995 UEFA Champions League, as well as the 1995 Best European Goalkeeper award. He made a total of 226 appearances for AFC Ajax.

Edwin then left Ajax to join Juventus Turin FC, he went on to make 66 appearances for them. Van der Sar remains the first and only non-Italian to keep goal for the Turin club

His move to the English Premier League (EPL) took him firstly to Fulham F.C. in 2001, reportedly for around £7.7 million. Initially signing a four year contract, he notched up 153 appearances for the North London club.

He moved to Manchester United on 1 June 2005 for a reported fee of £2 million, although the exact transfer fee was undisclosed. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson considered him the best goalkeeper to play for the club since Peter Schmeichel. He renewed his original two year contract in December 2006, signing for a further year to keep him at the club till the end of the 2007-08 season. Edwin made his debut against Debreceni in the Champions League. His premier league debut for Manchester United came against Everton FC away at Goodison Park. The game was won 2-0, and Edwin made a great impression making one of the saves of the season from a Tim Cahill header.

On 5 May 2007, his penalty saved helped assure a 1-0 triumph over Manchester City on the Manchester derby. The following day, Chelsea's failure to beat Arsenal at the Emirates ensured Manchester United's ninth Premier League trophy and van der Sar's first. He was also named to the 2006-07 PFA Team of the Year. Three months later, he was a catalyst in Manchester United's 16th FA Community Shield victory, as he saved three consecutive shots in a shootout after Manchester United and Chelsea played to a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time

On 21 December 2007, Van der Sar signed a new one-year deal, keeping him at Manchester United until the end of the 2008-09 season.

Van Der Sar was included in Holland's 1994 World Cup squad but did not play. He had to wait until 7 June 1995 for his international debut, against Belarus. Despite losing 1-0, Edwin had certainly made a good impression. He has been in goal for all three recent eliminations from major competitions by penalties: Euro 96, 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000

However, during the penalty shootout at the Euro 2004 quarter-final against Sweden, Van der Sar saved a penalty from Olof Mellberg, helping Netherlands to win the shootouts by 5-4 and go to the semifinals of that tournament, in which unfortunately the team lost to Portugal

Prior to the 2006 World Cup group match against Ivory Coast, Van der Sar had not conceded a goal in 10 consecutive non-friendly matches and kept a clean sheet for 1,013 minutes, an all-time European record

Edwin van der Sar has represented the Dutch national team 127 times, which makes him Holland's most capped player. That also puts him in the top sixty most capped players of all time. As captain of the Netherlands, he broke Frank de Boer's record in the 2006 World Cup second round match against Portugal

In spite of the disappointment of the Second Round loss, he confirmed that he would continue to play for the national team during the Euro 2008 qualifiers and the jointly hosted finals in Austria and Switzerland
On the day of his 37th birthday, Edwin was interviewed by Radio 538 and said that he intends to retire from international football following the Netherlands participation in the Euro 2008

Keeper of the Dutch national football team and Manchester United can be seen as a goalkeeper in the new television commercial of Smint

Edwin van der Sar and Perfetti Van Melle have a sponsorship contracted for the period of one year.

The advertising campaign takes Edwin van der Sar against the three attackers who take a penalty. Van der Sar knows it glorious to stop. The attackers are symbols of three inconveniences where Smint is the solution to: koffieaanslag, plaque and bad breath.
Jan Heeling (commercial director) Smint: ’Edwin fits perfectly with the brand Smint. He radiates confidence, you can always count on him. His congenial atmosphere and big publicity fit perfectly with the brand Smint. He is also ambassador since 2005 of the foundation Make A Wish what also got us very excited.'
