Louisville Kentucky Native Jarrard Harris began playing the clarinet in 4th grade in order to get out of class. He displayed a natural talent for music that eventually led him to pick up the saxophone in Jr. High school. He was turned on to jazz by his first saxophone teacher Mike Tracey and Bill Donaldson his first music instructor. Jarrard went on to attend the Youth Performing Arts School as a music student and also participated in the Louisville Youth Orchestra in addition to making the All-State Symphonic band and Jazz band on Clarinet and saxophone respectively. By high school Jarrard knew he wanted to further pursue music as a career, so he went onto The University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music to further his jazz studies. There he studied with Rick VanMatre, Pat Harbison, and Marc Fields. It was also at the University Of Cincinnati where he became a member of the Alpha Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity INC. Upon graduating from UC and a brief stint as educational intern at Jazz@ Lincoln Center Jarrard moved to Chicago to further his studies at DePaul University where in 2003 he obtained his Masters in Jazz Studies. Jarrard currently lives in Chicago where he is on the jazz faculty at Columbia College of Chicago and serving as artist instructor with the Thelonious Monk/Gallery 37 jazz performance program. He maintains an active teaching studio, in addition to adjudicating college and high school jazz festivals, giving masterclasses, lectures and performing in the U.S. and abroad.
