ABOUT NATE: As my best friend, Julio, says, “Nate is Spanish the way Madonna is Jewish.” I’m half-Catholic, half-Jewish, and can butter up old ladies from both cultures when I need to extract some details for a sketch. I grew up in the ho-hum Penn South apartments on Eighth Avenue and Twenty-fourth Street, and would go looking for trouble with Julio in Spanish Harlem when we were kids. My dad was a narc with the NYPD who was cool enough to encourage my interest in drawing. I’ve been told I look like him (he’s the Puerto Rican side). Eventually, I got my certificate in forensic arts at Quantico. My girlfriend, Terri Russo, a detective with the NYPD Homicide Resource Division out of Midtown North, is another one who appreciates my sketching talent, since I helped her solve the notorious Sketch Artist serial killer case, and also the more recent one Jonathan Santlofer writes about in THE MURDER NOTEBOOK . Other things you should know about me... I live in the unadorned apartment of a confirmed bachelor, the only resident in a commercial building, although Teri is trying hard to add some comfort & style to the place. My favorite hang out is El Museo del Barrio, I have an angel tattoo on the inside of my right forearm.
