At 21, Swedish singer-songwriter Fredrika Stahl already shows
amazing maturity.
She does not want to restrict herself to one genre or another and
expresses her very personal style, somewhere between pop and jazz. Her
vocal qualities make for a refined, natural and unaffected
performance.
Born in 1984 in Sweden, Fredrika spent most of her childhood in
France, which explains her perfect mastery of the French language. As
a child, she took ballet and piano lessons. Singing was another
passion, but her favorite stars then were her dad's: Simon &
Garfunkel, James Taylor, Chicago...
At 12, Fredrika moved back to Sweden and started to map her own
musical world.
Back in France after finishing school, she started out rather
modestly in a musical in Paris. Like so many young budding artists,
she worked late shifts in a pub to make ends meet.
That proved to be her luck for there she met Geef (3 Cinks Prod),
who would become her producer. They started working on some of
Fredrika's folksongs. About a year later, during a recording session,
she met pianist Tom McClung (currently playing with Archie Shepp). Tom
listened to her demo and offered to write jazz arrangements.
He soon got a dream team together on the album project: guitarist José
Palmer (DeeDee Bridgewater, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Archie Shepp, Manu
Katché...), double-bass player Diego Imbert (Biréli Lagrène, among
others.), drummer Karl Jannuska (Lee Konitz, François Théberge, Serge
Forté...) and saxophonist Hervé Meschinet (Arturo Sandoval, Michel
Legrand, Charles Aznavour, Claude Nougaro...).
Sound engineer Alban Sautour rallied round and his magic touch
brought the best out of the album.
