In a Former Life I was Amish!

About Me

From Ivesdale To ArthurSt. Patricks Day, 1979. A drizzly day but all the trees seem so green. Grandma Marie drives like a woman with fire in her fingers. We are going so fast I don’t think the tires are really touching the pavement, just hovering above. Sarah and me sit in the backseat, the red leather is damp from our drippy wind breakers. We eat green tinted marshmallow fluff balls from Hostess and we are allowed to drink watery hot chocolate from grandma’s dragon fly green ceramic Irish coffee cups. We watch the grey clouds move slowly over soybean crops and rows of stumpy sweet corn stalks. There are so many twisted, torso-thick trees that line the road that passes the Lake Fork Cemetery where my Grandpa Ab is buried. We’re bumping along until Atwood and then through to the Amish Mecca of Arthur where I mentally put myself in the passenger side of the black buggies with the triangle on the backside, which we are passing by more frequently. Married Amish men with their wide brimmed hats and unruly beards walk with their wives to the butchers or cheese makers. I suddenly want to be included, wearing a simply Navy dress with no buttons and stiff round collar and cuffs, a black bonnet hiding my thick red hair. My boots would be the same blackened and cracked work boots as all the others wear. Tourists take pictures of these people on the sly which they don’t seem to mind, but I really think they do mind, random flashbulb shocks of light hitting their eyes, they don’t even have electricity in their homes and somehow we might be stealing their souls. But I am not Amish or Mennonite. I am not sitting in a knitting circle or churning butter in a barrel. I am a skinny Catholic, now seated with grandma in a dark room of the Sugar Bowl Restaurant where they serve up salt less starchy food but we come for the champion cherry pie then we drive back to Ivesdale where everything for me seems to begin and end. ***

My Interests

I've been fascinated with the Amish since I was a young child. I love vintage clothing, antiques, Raggedy Ann, reading before bed, the smell of gasoline and black magic markers, red tulips, orange pumpkins, writing poetry and fiction, writing in on-line diaries (I refuse to say "blog"), black cats, fat cats, psycho cats, murder victim survivors, Buddhism, Taoism, Me-ism.

I'd like to meet:

Ultimately, my doppelganger? Just kidding. My favorite people know how to laugh at themselves and the absurdity of this planet we live on. I'd love to meet people that like to laugh until they can't breathe. I'd also love to meet people that not only are neurotic but embrace being so! Make me laugh, make me cry. Just make me feel SOMETHING! Some fave movie moments: **
