About Me

Jeff has been playing music in various forms for as far back as he can remember. He began bothering his parents on an old drumset he'd inherited from his uncle when he was 4 years old. From that point on it was a musical roller coaster ride.
Jeff began playing guitar in the later years of highschool after realizing that a drumkit was an impractical thing to be hauling about and began to be jealous of his fellow band mates being able to write songs and not being able to contribute his ideas in melodic form. He then began writing songs that varied from the downright idiotic (they seemed cool at the time) to the downright catchy (you might say the planets aligned themselves just right).
He is currently going through the long and arduous process of recording a solo album that will hopefully will be available within his lifetime. His influences range from the British Invasion sounds of the Beatles and the Hollies, to the folk rock/singer songwriter stylings of Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot. He spent a good five year playing various open stages and gigs of both the cover and original variety (as both a sideman playing bass or drums as required and also fronting bands when the occasion arose) in Toronto. In 2007 he relocated to London, ON where he gigged occasionally (at places like The Richmond Tavern and The London Music Club) and sat in with various prominent players in the London music scene. He has since relocated to the Greater Toronto Area and looks forward to reacquainting himself with a burgeoning music scene.

Young performer delivers the oldies at Doolin’s

He’s only 30, but singer/guitarist Jeff Kahl will be delving into some great singer/songwriter stuff dating right back to the 60s this Friday at Doolin’s. That includes your Gordon Lightfoot, CCR, Jim Croce, Burton Cummings, Blue Rodeo and the Beatles. “Some people have joked with me. They like to say I was born in the wrong decade,” he says. “I guess I’ve always valued good songwriting.” “I grew up in the Grunge era, but secretly I went home and put on the Beatles.” You will also hear some songs off his upcoming debut CD Catching Echoes Off The Walls. It balances his delightfully ragged originals with covers of Bruce Cockburn, Robert Johnson, and (1970’s Quebecois band) Harmonium. The Lorne Park Secondary grad grew up in a musical family, and plays four instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano). In fact, he played the circuit with his father Ole for several years. He has worked extensively with the Neil Young cover band Harvest, and in his own Neil-influenced act Spookyhorse. Kahl’s song If I Could Be The One gets requested at jams around Port Credit. But he’s hoping for more with the new release (produced by Spookyhorse sidekick Myke Mazzei). “I wouldn’t mind getting some airplay,” he says. “That would be nice.” It's a 9 p.m. start at Doolin’s Pub, 1575 Clarkson Rd., at South Service Rd.
