About Me

Tempt My Faith (TMF) is the culmination and vision of musician/artist Joshua Davis. In fact if asked he would assert that TMF is not a band but merely a vessel from which vibrations emanate through music to move and to feel.As his love of music progressed he became enamored with the drum-set and by 8 yrs old was studying and playing as much as possible. By 10 years old he was enthralled with the songwriting of the Beatles and Elton John along with the attitude of Rock Bands like Queen, Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin and Cheap Trick. Also at an early age, he was introduced and gravitated towards soul music. Sly Stone, James Brown, George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye. Tower of Power, Aretha Franklin and Prince were all staples in his household along with a healthy education in Jazz (with Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk being some of his heroes). This ultimately led him to want to employ the power and attitude of rock music with the freedom of the funk. As George Clinton would say “free your mind and your ass will follow, funk not only moves, it removes”. At age 13 Joshua discovered Prince’s Controversy album and that set him on a course for understanding hooks within a pop/soul/funk format.Always on the quest for music that inspires and vibrates, Sade and Chic were uncovered and became an intergral part of his musical growth. Anytime you are able to see Joshua perform, you can rest assured that prayers went out to the spirit of the late master, Tony Thompson. In his early twenties Joshua was greatly influenced by the mixture of organic instruments inter-weaved with electronics. Two of his earliest influences with this would be Miles Davis (Tutu and Amandala) and Seal. Following that discovery Joshua went on to discover three of his greatest mentors, Peter Gabriel, Sananda Maitreya and Me’shell N’degeocello. All three of these artist held their integrity and created some of the most diverse and creative music that one can hear. "Not since Sly Stone had I heard such lyrical content of beauty and imagery laced with hope and optimism than Seal, Sananda Maitreya and Me'shell". Along with such influences as Sweetback,Massive Attack as well as the funky ass industrial stylings of NIN, a distinctive style with his writing was taking shape.TMF mission is for a musical vibration to move beings to dance. For when you dance you are free and for those warriors who dare to be free will come an ocean of hope, optimism, love and tolerance.Thank you for listening.TMF 2007
