In Theo Loevendie’s Ensemble Ziggurat western and exotic instruments play together as if they were always meant to do so. Chinese and Arabic strings, Armenian reeds and Easter-European panflute add timbres and flavours that blend wonderfully with the western instruments. Soaring above this eclectic mix is the powerful voice of avant garde Jazz singer Kristina Fuchs.
The majority of Ziggurat’s repertoire has been composed especially for the group by Theo Loevendie. His compositions meld a diverse collection of instruments, textures and rhythms into a musical experience that is hard to classify or even describe. It is a culture smashing body of work where middle-eastern drones melt into Jazz-tinged improvisations...where western classical muses dance with Latin rhythms... Ziggurat creates a musical Gondwana Land that is a celebration of the the entire world’s musical heritage.
