If the world is fast becoming a melting pot of cultures, then Matt Stern is a musician for the new world. A native Montrealer, Matt brings a broad spectrum of cultural influences into his original folk-pop style. He has performed in Japan, China and Nicaragua and incorporates several languages into his music. Most independent artists begin their careers in their hometown. For Matt, the world is his stage.
Matt’s musical career began with an EP and the realization that he had to do things his way.. with a little help from his friends. From this ideology came Songs for the Wandering Spirit, his first full-length album. On Songs, Matt sings his folk-based, pop-melodic insightful tunes in English, French and Spanish, with clever hints of jazz, blues, and soul thrown into the mix. Many of Matt's musical friends lend their talents to Songs, giving the album a sense of intimate warmth and cultural diversity. Tunes from Songs have appeared on radio stations and podcasts across Canada, as well as in the US, Japan, Poland and Hungary. Mike Gowing of CIBL Radio Montreal has made the bold prediction that Matt will one day win a Juno.
A popular live artist in his hometown with sold-out shows and an appearance on Global Television, Matt recently traveled to Japan for three months of musical exploration and touring. He shared the stage and studio time with Tokyo musicians Be The Voice, a seasoned pop duo with a loyal following in Japan and Korea. Matt's return to Canada sparks the next step in the evolution of his career. What’s next? There have been rumours of new songs (in Japanese?!), fresh collaborations and a newfound resolve to dive deeper into the world of music.
