About Me

Alfred Stieglitz is a pioneering photographer largely attributed to making photography acceptable as a medium of fine art. Born in 1864, Stieglitz held a coveted place amid the pantheon of legendary 20th Century photographers - a position elevated further still by his marriage to painter Georgia O'Keeffe and his friendship with other photographic greats such as Ansel Adams and Edward Steichen.Stieglitz was editor of American Amateur Photographer magazine for a brief period before becoming editor of an influential newsletter for the New York Camera Club.in 1902 Stieglitz organized an exclusive photographic group which became known as the Photo-Secession, to serve "as a distinctive medium of individual expression" for the photographic arts. Many notable photographers, including Steichen, Clarence White and Gertrude Kasebier joined its ranks. He also managed an influencial gallery in New York City. The gallery went on to become a launch pad for introducing the United States to early European modernists such as Matisse, Cezanne and Picasso. It was also where Georgia O'Keeffe's work first gained notice. After a long, notable and influential life, Steiglitz died in 1946.
